In my time at Parks, bumps were plenty. One ERF flat - TFG 574K spent 3 months in the bodyshop part of the garage while the bottom front of the cab was stitched back together

Hi, I worked for Ernie Parks around 68/69 and drove RCW125 AEC Mercury rated at 14 ton but always carried 10/11 tons especially from Pembroke to wrexham, liverpool & Manchester markets, along side Eric Brown, George Johnson & Harry Beesley, & Graham (putty) in the warehouse, also stood in for John Driffield on the milk run to Healds Dairy in Didsbury. Then when Ernie bought. 2 ERFs -HMB a Gardner 120 which Harry drove & a 5 pot 100, HMA694G.which I drove. ( it was a flat then not a curtainsider ) . George Johnson had a EAC mandator this was replace with an ERF gardner 180. can’t remember the reg. George did not want to have nights out when Ernie got the Golden Wonder Crisp job, George asked me if I would swap with him so I was running from North Yorkshire, to the Corby factory, now long gone along with Golden Wonder crisps. I think the Eric Browns 150 powered ERF was replaced with a 240 powered Foden, still no sleeper cabs. Joe Turner was in the garage then, before he started on his own. I have got photos of RCW125 this truck was in Vintage Truck Magazine a few years ago. Contact me if any more info required. John Harrop @ jharrop@fsmail.net.

Thanks for that bit of history John, George Johnson passed away not long after I finished there in '89. Son Lee was always full of wit and with the pair of us being diesel junkies, there was friendly rivalry between us. Pioneering the development of the everlasting cigarette , Lee started with F10 Volvo 'RRJ, later getting the keys to the DAF 3600 - C117 LEE  .
So Lee Johnson where are you now?

380streamline:
Anyone have pics of the trucks from this fleet? Back in the day, the firm was just up the road from
my home; in '89 at age 15, I got lucky when I was offered the chance to work in the garage mostly
at weekends. I was taught to paint by hand, and I’ve many memories from the few months I worked
there. I cut my teeth on a Super B series ERF under tuition from Pete ‘Taffy’ Jones, and some of the names - Johnny Roles, John Driffied, Mick Driffield, Brian Glossop, George Johnson, Lee Johnson,
Brian Leach, Arthur Leach, Barry Large, John Leah, Clive Williams, Cyril Williams, Len Slater, Eric
Hilderbrandt, Andy Gaddis, Ralph Coombes, Rene Arnout, Pete Wolstenhulme, Russ Kallenburg
workshop foreman Eric Mainwareing, Steve Mainwareing, Stuart Cartledge, Dave, Pete Antrobus, Martin
Antrobus, and the legendary Taffy Jones. My quiet unassuming manner upset an older chap when he
returned to work. ‘Bazza’ was grumpy, ignorant, and several times I heard him screaming at the rest of
crew, ‘he’s no bloody experience and a liability’. Oddly enough when I walked in to see what the fuss was
about, the set went quiet. It fazed me not one bit, and I still spoke to him as normal even though he
said nothing back. This was my first lesson in discovering not everyone has the same philosophy in life
that I have, i.e welcome new faces but still, let the story begin…

At the light end, WNF 458S & VND 750S were D series Fords, FNE 550D, TFG 573K/574K 4 wheeler ERF’s.
The rest were all curtainsiders; HMA 694G, B26 MRF, day cab ERF, pair of E series with 180 â– â– â– â– â– â– â–  - F288 LNB
& F170 TRE. '288 was driven by Eric Hilderbrandt and was kept immaculate inside & out. BNE 509Y was a
6x4 F7 VOLVO, later replaced by a 2421 Merc - the power and the glory ha ha !

The artic fleet started with Super B series ERF’s, - WBU 36S, VNF 877S, BDB 966T, JVU 424V, GNE 381V
& MNE 903W. All had straight 8 Gardner’s & 9 speed Fuller 'box. The Gardner certainly had a sound of its
own, and one could hear the trucks returning to the yard well over half a mile away. A brace of F10 VOLVO’S
were RRF 599W & RRJ 994W; the lone F12 was BFA 958Y.

Parks had been a traditional 2+2 operator, and with the advent of 38 tonnes in 1983, the older 4x2 units
as detailed above were converted to 6x2 midlift by Southworth. The trailer fleet was entirely tandem
axle, therefore the 3+2 configuration was the way to go. There were fixed, and convertable bulkers,
and a number of Boalloy curtainsiders - 4, 42, 43, 47 & 48, the last being built on M+G chassis and brand
new in 1989, this particular trailer also going to the coveted Cheshire show that year.

F241 cabbed DAF’s were good earners, E878 WFM was a 2800 later uprated to 3300 by altering the
fuel pump setting. Rebadged the lot. C206 LMA was a factory 3300 recabbed after an accident,
and a brand new one at that. B489 LVN and C117 LEE were Spacecabs, 3300 & 3600. C117 was
a flying machine, and quite a change for the driver who previously had WBU 36S

Several secondhand Scania R112’s were purchased, the 333HP tag axle tractors being ideal for
the job. B626 CGD (later stolen :frowning:), C749 GSJ, D260 LSJ and C182 GGG - how can you forget a
reg like that lol. Work was flat out at the time and clocking in one afternoon T cut and rags were
stuffed into my mitt, the lettering was removed and the truck ran like this for a while until being
painted. I remember it was a race between me and another chap to see who could strip their side
of the cab first, though who won is lost in the midsts of time

Saving the best til last. Straight 8’s are one thing, but if the job wants doing, V8 Scanias are the
way to go. Things would never be quite the same again…
E904 OFU was a twinsteer R142M new in late '87. The gentle chatter on tickover shaded what lay
beneath, as the intercooled 142 was like a bat out of hell. Driven by Clive Williams the muscular
power of the V8 claimed many victims on the road :smiling_imp: :sunglasses:
E210 BVM & F220 SBE were twinsteer 143.450’s, BVM was on bulk work; 'SBE mostly running with trailer 48.

So there you have it, the first transport firm I was gainfully employed at and a whole raft of
memories. The firm still operates today, though Lees lane is a quieter place these days :unamused:

my dad worked for eric & steve mainwareing in about 83,they ran a couple of f7’s on timber work running out of parkers timber ,also they carted a lot of forklift’s about,i think they both serviced them  ,any one got any pic’s of there yellow & green f7’s :exclamation:

When I was there Eric ran a pair of 6x2 rigids - DAF 2500 flat E885 WFM, and Scania 93M curtainsider F835 FBU :sunglasses:

i was talking to eric a month ago in middlewich,he has a little yard there ,he does a lot of hihab servicing, and that week end he was going to plymouth to do some servicing,he’s in is 70’s but still doing a bit

Oh right, whereabouts in Middlewich, and do you have a phone number, I last saw Eric at Ernest Axon’s at Cheadle Heath, in 1995

Born in Crewe, I know that part of Cheshire very well, and it’d be great to have a natter with him again, tell him its Harvie, he should remember me

i’ll try and get his number for you,his yard is 300yrd’s away from where beech’s erf used to be on the industrial estate, before you get to pochins yard.
