I have just read a proposal by DVLA to extend a drivers term of renewing a licence if having a medical problem, this is going through a party of MP`s at the moment and could be forthcoming. What it means is a driver who has a medical condition, and renews his licence every 1.2.3 years at present, would be able to have it extended by up to 10 years, this includes the HGV and car entitlements as i believe it takes up too much time and is also unnecessary at the best of times, as a Doctor has to fill out forms and relieve you of the best part of £100, and also get re-issued a licence anyway. Me personally is having to renew every year because of my age, and having to take an extended medical because of my condition every 3 years ( since extended from 1 year ) At the present time i sent my licence off in February, and although i have fulfilled all the requirements, including a treadmill test, i am still awaiting my licence 5 months down the line, so i certainly welcome this piece of legislation, and save a few quid into the bargain, you can look at this piece of news on the DVLA website.
My licence has been given back to me on a 3 year period due to the detached retina and retinal years I had. I’ve got to have another field test in about 2 year and 3 month and hopefully all is still well.
very interesting, where did you read this,■■
i will be curious to see how i fair , i am currently on a 3 year licence due to stents , expires Nov 15 , for my own peace of mind i would prefer to be examined regulary via the LGV medical , sort of like a school report otherwise i probably wouldn,t bother going to doctors
Barry, log onto the DVLA website and lock onto the driving licences and its there.
I have no medical conditions and can only get it renewed for 5 years so i had a look and this is what it says
“This change applies to holders of Group 1 driving licences (cars and motorcycles) where the medical condition may be suitable for a longer review period.”
