As far as I read dvla form D777B, you have to pay 19 pounds if you replace your tachograph card, if it issued for the first time its 32 pounds.

Even if it is, whilst the replacement of a faulty card is free, the new card has the same expiry date as the original (faulty) one, so it won’t help you avoid the £19 charge. I had a (genuinely) faulty one replaced a few years ago that was about 4 years old; the new one had about a year left to run before it expired.

Especially when the shelf stackers proficiency exams are free year on year!
Although I hear the mop and bucket navigation course if fairly pricey…

They probably did it like that specifically to stop people scamming it like you were suggesting - otherwise there would be thousands of cards that would “mysteriously stop working” at about 4 years and 11 months…

Aye, it’s just another way to get more cash out of us. Like how the photocard licenses suddenly expire after 5 years now, not 10.

So every 5 years (current 10yr licenses are valid until they expire, then every 5 years) you need to pay for:

  • a new photocard license - £17, should be £14 but we can’t renew lorry/bus licenses online
  • a new tacho card, £19
  • a new CPC card, £25 from what I can find - though maybe that comes free when you spend £100 on CPC credits

I make that £61 every 5 years from every bus/lorry driver in the country. Nice wee earner the ■■■■■■■■ have going there. Even if it was only £20 for the lot, it’s still a rip off. :imp:

The five-yearly licence renewal for bus and lorry licences is free.

You don’t need to renew your driver qualification card, you get issued with a new one once you complete 35 hours of periodic training for each period, with an expiry date five years later than the previous one.
