DVLA considering charging for 5-yearly renewals

dft.gov.uk/dvla/consultations

Due to the introduction of 5-yearly medical renewals (including for drivers under 45) because of the 2013 EU directive, the DVLA are considering the best way of paying for it.

Their preferred option (option 1) is to start charging £20 to vocational drivers when they renew every 5 years (whereas currently you only have to pay every 10 years when your photo is up for renewal).

Alternatively (option 2) they charge more to 17-year-olds applying for their first provisional licence. (£50 to £52.25)

Another possibility (option 3) is that they increase the charge for photocard renewals for all drivers from £20 to £20.70, which would mean vocational drivers didn’t have to pay every 5 years, but would have to pay 70p extra every 10 years.

I’m guessing none of us like option 1 particularly! :imp:

Consultation questions

  1. On the basis of the considerations and rationale set out in the impact assessment
(Annex B) we believe that Option 1 is the strongest. Do you agree? (Please provide
    evidence to support your response).
  2. If not, what alternative approach would you suggest? Please consider:
  • any unintended consequences of proposed options
  • the anticipated costs and/or benefits
  • how you are affected (please also include an explanation of the activities
    you undertake)

by emailing financeconsultation@dvla.gsi.gov.uk
or by writing to Corporate Financial Services, C1/W, DVLA, Swansea, SA6 7JL

They’re relying on us not bothering to respond. So next time you’re on a 45, make sure you do!

I pick option 2!
