Thing is they no longer issue the paper part with the new plastic card, its all a bit modern looking the new card, p1553d off though as it now has a union jack on front of it, I wanted a st George
So if anyone else has to send to them, do it recorded delivery and right now as they are obvs firing on all cylinders for a change 
Renewed my digi card the other day over the phone and card was here within 3 days, as promised.
They tend to only be slow in the medical team.
I’ve always had good service from DVLA, pretty much everything I’ve sent off for has taken not much more than a week and often things get returned in less than a week.
As shep532 said, it seems to be where there’s medical issues they fall apart 
I sent mine last Monday for a change of address and it came back Thursday!!!

Now most of the records are all digital then there’s no reason why they can’t have quick turn around times.

You can say that again. Took me a good few months to get Cat C provisional put on. No medical problems whatsoever… Not looking forward to 45 when I have to do the whole charade again!
Took my private plate off my car few weeks ago, had the v5 back within 3 days.
Bought new car a week ago and still no sign of v5 yet
If renewing the digi card is anything to go by credit where its due.
Done mine over the phone last Sat,new one arrived on Mon.
