Duty start end?

hi all one of the companys I work for (im agency driver ) as come up with a new idea if you start at say 5am you have to report to transport desk 5 min before start time but will only start being paid from 5am now it can take you 10 min the sign in go through a security check the walk to transport so you are on site for 15 min before you get to transport office same when shift is done only allowed 5min after card pulled to de brief then sign out to through security check your thoughts please

If you can’t make that 15 minutes back and quadruple it and then some every single shift you’re in the wrong job.

Manual entries.

Nobody can legally tell you to do that in your own time - that’s it

If they require you to do something for work purposes, then it’s work, so you get paid. End of.

If it’s not ask them to get a clarification email from your local enforcement office. That usually results in a backward step or two.

I’m no stickler for the rules, but I’m dead against dishonestly ripping someone off, and that is what they are doing to you.

Realistically it depends how much you want to do that particular job, enough to give them maybe half an hour for free a day then you do it, if you’re not willing to give them any free time then as said above, manual entries to cover whatever your actual start and finish times were then let your agency argue it out with them.

I’m usually 10-20 minutes early in the mornings anyway but in my car within 5 minutes of the card coming out/ clocking off, don’t have to suffer any of this debriefing nonsense currently but if any firm requires it then they’re paying for it!

Two choices - tell them to stop taking the ■■■■ and asking you to work in your own time otherwise you’ll walk, a good driver will always find other work… or, smile politely and do what they ask then get that unpaid time back when it comes to doing deliveries and taking breaks, have 10 mins before leaving a delivery or pull up for a break and have 10-15 mins before changing the mode switch, it’s not difficult is it.

You wait in the carpark and get them to bring the lorry and paperwork to you  they aint gunna pay you for walking to work pal

try another agy!

are you insured whilst you are on site unpaid??

spot I worked at told us not to turn up more then 5 mins before start time after a guy fell down some stairs and put a claim in, he turned up early and decided to use the office toilet rather then the drivers bog, and then went arse over ■■■ down stairs… he didnt get a pay out as he was in a area he should not have been and at an unreasonable time?? he used to come in earlier for his morning dump and get a wash as he had young kids and didnt want to wake them…

They have saved half hours pay doing that ,wash the unit or read the paper in a layby and say there was a accident, get it back that way, simples

Time for a bit of hanging about in the day I think to get the 15 minutes back, also if your not clocked on your not insured (as far as I know).

An easy way to drag that time back.

Fold and unfold your Netto carrier bag 75 times. If you want to drag it out more, change the plaster on your glasses.

What’s all this ‘Get the time back during your shift’ nonsense?

Just don’t give it to them in the first place - Simples. Will you accept a deduction in your pay as you left the engine running at a red light? Get a grip and tell them to do one.

If you want to work for free, go and help out at a homeless shelter, you may need it one day if this crap continues.

It’s simple.
Agency says 1600 turn up at the office at 1600. If they say you should be here for xyz tell em straight.

Grow a pair and man up. If you got 15min I need me grass cutting free of course :unamused:

I can make a guess which large company this may well be. Although it is a pain I don’t have a problem with it because the one I am thinking of add an extra 15 minute paid time to the end of the shift. If you time the hand over well you end up 25 minutes to the good.

Mastercare, Newark ?

thanks all don’t worry I get the time back its just the principal of the thing multi million pound company penny pinching

How do you get it back at the end of your shift? Sitting in your truck for 15 mins is still work time you get paid for.
Clocking out at 4:15 but walking through the gates at 4:00 is getting it back but they are only giving 5 mins from pulling card to debrief.

We get paid off the tracker + 15 mins for checks at start of shift. End of shift is pack my bag, keys out and home time.

its pretty common practice to be at work before your start time, I have to be ready to go from 8am not turning up. a lot of warehouse lads have briefings prior to start of shift.

and as others have said if its such an issue 15 mins a day isn’t hard to make up.
