Hello
I used to work for Durhams, I worked out of the Morpeth depot with my father Eddie Jeffreys. The company was taken over by PD in 1993 - 1994. As part of the sale of Durhams PD had to keep the name and colours white lorries with the orange red and blues stripes. The red and orange in the stripes was Durhams original colours, and the two shades of blue we’re from when Sandersons was taken over by R Durham & sons.
Regards
I drove for Durhams in 74, most of the time I had the ERF with the RR Eagle 220 but ended up driving the old Atki with the Gardner 150, Chinese 6 and that old 18ft. tandem axle trailer in Head Wrightsons casting works in Haverton Hill…that was a cushy number apart from the Atki had NO power steering…I had arms the size of treetrunks in them days…do you remember Dennis in the transport office? the one who stuttered all the time…used to cost a fortune in phone calls if you got him on the line…by the time he gave you instructions you could have loaded and sheeted up a trailer…
then I left to go to Calor Gas on the tanks, night shift to Bowater Scott in Barrow in Furness…with heating Oil from Phillips terminal at Seal Sands…then I got one of those 44 ton Missisippi Gas Tanks that used to belong to Northern LPG…bloody things were only half full at 32 ton and had no baffles in them.
You had to stop at least 6-8 feet before the junction as the Gas used to charge up the tank and hit the bulkhead and shove you 6 feet forwards after you thought you had stopped…

Just remembered that Bobby Durham owned Arthur Sanderson’s too, they were based in the Boro’ with Blue coloured Atki’s.
Durhams were awarded “Haulier of the year” by Commercial Motor mag sometime in the early 80s.They had a big fleet and I seem to recall they were ■■■■■■■ with a South Wales haulier in the 70s,doing a Lichfield changeover - or maybe it was Sandersons, can’t remember,as usual .

Hullo Jetsream,
That’s quite right Sanderson’s were taken over and were part of the Durham Fleet. They had their yard in Great Broughton ( Brian Clough was born there ) near Stokesley.
Cheers, Archie.
I don’t recall any names from the office but there was a foreman/manager that was allways on my case, caught my girlfriend in the cab once and gave me a bollocking in front of everyone
For a while i drove one of the Atki twin steers, that had a ■■■■■■■ that made a horrible clattering noise. When a driver called Keith Paulson left i took over his job as we both lived in Wetherby, i would take the load the night driver had left and deliver it up north then reloaded for the night driver to take to the yard Durhams had further south, can’t remmber exactly where now.
I do remember going to a foundry that had big slabs of very hot steel laying about outside cooling off, drop empty trailer then pick up loaded one, that was the easy part, then you had to take off all the lenses and most of the bulbs because they were gone from the other trailer
