Interesting to hear from someone who enjoyed working for Mr Ecclestone

Its not all beer, sunshine and fast cars…here`s my immpression of when i worked on there…just to give the subject some balance of course

did a couple of months as a rigger on Bernie Ecclstones outfit based at Biggin Hill, Kent. Couldnt stand it for more than that, quit at San Marino and caught the first plane home.

Treated as if you were lower than a piece of dirt.It was made clear that you were fortunate to be there, that they could replace you tomrrow with no problem, that you should be grateful to be working for them!!!

Everybody scared of upsetting the bosses, everybody cleaning everything non-stop (we even pushed a broken down, clapped out van out of the warehouse and had to wash it!!)… I spent 6 hours one morning with a can of Mr Sheene and a duster polishing anything that I could see and this was inside the huge mobile studio that we dragged around!! Told them i was a truck driver not a skivvy! …Then was shown a pile of plastic wheels, chair backs and seats. There you go, the “foreman” said, there`s about 250 chairs in bits there, put them all together then when you have finished let me know and I will come and inspect them!!! Then you can clean them to!!!

Truck driving was only a minor part of the job and they had quite a turn over of people. Never again!

Ive never met such a mass of egos and poseurs in my life. Everybody was best mates of course with"Shue" or “Ralph” or “Jaques” or “Me and DC” etc. The stories of when “me and micheal were in the bar” or “…so I said to Jacques…and then he said to me” !!!

The best way to describe it is like working in a bubble that looks great from the outside but when you finally get inside it STINKS!!!

Pathetic, the lot of them.

Bullitt.

According to the sound of your experience bullitt i’d sooner do a spot of muckshifting with the lads than endure that ■■■■■■■■!

Mal:

Believe me Mal, so would I…muck shifting would seem much more attractive after working in the F1 enviroment.

Not all the chaps were that bad but quite a few were… one day , in Imola when we were setting up these pods that make up the TV studios, one of the automated sliding doors kept sticking so they called in a local chap…this little Italian turns up, eyes out on sticks, hes actually in the HQ of F1 (for an Italian it must seem like heaven!!), anyway he fixes the problem then, as hes about to be escorted off the site he asks, pointing at someones head, if could have one of the baseball caps that were issued, not a new one, but an old one that someone was wearing…BIG MISTAKE…he gets told, in no uncertain terms, where to go…“these are only for use by OFFICIAL F1 personnel” says this goon, a foreman who had apparently been around on the F1 circuit for a few years and loved to let people know it. :unamused: :unamused: With that the Italian is swiftly escorted out of the gate and dismissed with a “go away little man” attitude!!! :imp: :imp:
And all he wanted was an old cap as a momento!!

Heard a few other tales…the one about one chap allegdly sacked for having a personal fax msg accidently sent through to one of the business offices :unamused: …Another chap allegdly sacked because, after saying “excuse me” several times to the crowd blocking the entrance to the lifts after checking into an hotel with his baggage, and being ignored, had to push his way through them…only for the phone to ring in his room 10 minutes later saying dont bother unpacking, your fired!!!..apparently the crowd of people were VIP guests and he, being a mere bod should have waited until they were ready to move!!! :open_mouth:

One of the bosses looked like he had just stepped out of the 70`s!! (Jason King was the name of the programme I think, or was it “The Persuaders”…if your old enough to remember  )…anyway, everybody seemed really scared of this chap, alledgedly he had abit of a temper and would fire people on the spot if he found fault!!..but they would also ■■■■ up to him in the most embarrassing way :unamused:

These may just be tales but if they were true and I would like to emphasise the word if ,it wouldnt surprise me (sadly). To be fair, I wouldnt say that alot of the lads on there were “truck drivers” as most people would define a truck driver…they were riggers etc who also had class one licences.

The trucks were exempt from tacho laws cos they were defined as TV studios or equipment (something like that)…all routes, race to race, were planned in advance and YOU MUST NOT DIVERT OFF THE SAID ROUTE :open_mouth:
Driving uniform consisting of short sleeved shirt and black jeans which had to be worn at all times when driving the truck (black jeans in southern Europe in the summer!!! :open_mouth: :open_mouth:  )

If your the type of truck driver who is independent minded…can actually think for his/herself… is perfectly capable of making your own decisions…doesnt need to have someone checking your work every hour or so or looking over your shoulder…and likes your own company then the job is NOT for you, IMHO.

Maybe anybody else who has worked in F1 would like to post their views or experiences…just so as to give a bit of balance to the subject.

Cheers, bullitt.

Nowt wrong with abit of muckshifting, keeps me out of trouble

think it was Jason King Bullit, if by that you mean the geezer looked like Peter Wyngarde the lead actor with a great big mexican looking tache! I am old enought to remember the persuaders, it had a great theme tune!

Says it in a very good way, I’d hate it I know!

I know a feller thats been around the F1 world a long time now, I only know him as “pop”, he was on for goodyear for years, and i think might be on for renault now, but I only vaguely know the feller so cant be sure, he is definately in that world tho!

Ive had a few years on it gav, it’s a good laugh if you get with a bunch of good lads i think, i like to get about though so i couldnt do it for ever.

Well it seems like someone got the message :stuck_out_tongue:

swiftly escorted out of the gate and dismissed with a “go away little man” attitude!!!

Isnt that what Dorna have done to Bernie this week :stuck_out_tongue:

       I’ll tell you what, i am typing this still    You definitly worked on there… Jason King’s alter ego Was
“DESY” aka Nigel DeStraighter or something like that a bit of " a very physical hand jerking movent" sort of person   …to be politcaly correct   Oh and dont forget he always had this look :sunglasses: or on top of his head :unamused: I had a different attitude to most of them all there, as I had done the GH thing 1st, up & down to Spain, worked my way throught the Rock n Roll & Coference work, also a lot Theatrical touring, now if you want to talk about trl swops, greasing 5th wheels & tight blind side get in’s, try that game :frowning:
as for F1, it was just a Craic for me, taking the “Urinal Extract” out of some of the “super stars” with the little “Cliks”, giving the “New Boys” stick, Bullying I think you could call it, but I’m Not called Dodgy for nothing, as for the polising, well lets just say when i left ( jumped ship b4 pushed ) Get 1 from the store get one free   , the driving bit used to make    as when we left a circuit, it was either like a star burst firework going off, or they would pull up just up the road & wait until someone went passed ( like me ) & follow them ( me ). Prime example was how the " Old Boys School " been there done it know it :unamused: no nothings, would have to be the 1st to leave & arrive as if you got a medal :stuck_out_tongue: :stuck_out_tongue: so i sat waiting for most to roar off on " said Route " which was out of the parking area at Malpensa head out to the A8 then onto A26 round the top end of Milan running anti clock & down towards Alessandria, meanwhile    I turned south into a 5 ton weight limit, , no it was :smiling_imp: :stuck_out_tongue: as i knew it was sort of OK
but took me straight onto the A4, couple of Klicks straight onto the A26, but beknown to me 1 of the "number 1’s " ( funny wot that means really ) saw me leaving in the oppsite direction & followed, :open_mouth: he was when he saw the bridge :imp:    , after pulling into a services for a break, he pulled in to Bllllk  tell me off, only after sitting there for 45 mins to see the " super stars drive by, they still had to stop for a break :sunglasses: result
1 up for the Proper Truck Drivers… :smiling_imp: :sunglasses:  . no but seriously I just went every having a  at that lot, did you do any of the other Jobs… I used to do the refuelling of the nodes around the track, only to re - locate certain swag,
but yes all I can say " Jason King " must have had a BIG BOTTOM as their was a lot People up there

Still     just raed it again, about your bit " just got on next plane "
what the others dont realise is if you even thought you might jack in They the
" Management " would take you back to the hotel, get your kit bag packed up, pack your personal stuff, check out, back to the cicuit, hand kit & passes in, then get your ticket home    your now HISTORY

    Laugh !!! I cant even spel wrigt nouw, must be tired   couldn’t be the wine

Well, you`ve been to Imola, you know how far the hotel was from the circuit entrance…told “Jason King” i was leaving… just walked out the gate, back to the hotel, into reception, asked if they could arrange a flight and a taxi today…went upstairs…threw MY gear in my bag, left their gear in the wardrobe and went home…end of. No “escorts” etc just me doing my thing.

A couple of guys who stayed on for that season phoned me a few days later to say that, at first, nobody could believe what I had done…"this is F1, they said…nobody walks out of F1!!!

Cost me about £300 to get home though, but was worth it, was in the pub at about 8pm that night.

Went down to Biggin Hill the next day…walked up to the guy in the gate box who recognised me from my earlier time there…“alright mate…just come to pick my car up alright?..cheers, back in a minute.”…and that was that…Job done.

Not worked in F1 and don’t think I will be because of the big organisation culture.
However from my experience of working in small teams and from club level to GP2, I have come to these conclusions.
There are many people at all levels of motorsport who think they are much more important than they are, this includes truck drivers who think they are special because they don’t do general haulage :unamused: but in truth they would never be able to cope with a weeks tramping round the UK.
there are Jumped up mechanics , team managers who think you should pay them for the honour of working for them and racing drivers who forget that we put in hours of work, so they are able to race.

However despite all this I enjoyed last year and hope to be doing the same next year. The team I work for is small and we have to work hard, but we have formed into a good team and can mostly have a good laugh, even if it is at my expense, and most of the other people at the circuit including many of the F1 lads we come into contact with aren’t stuck-up and are always willing to help you out, even to the point of lending us tools if we haven’t got the right one in the pit lane.
So maybe it’s better to be on a team than work for FOM, but then maybe you need to be in the right team, as I know other people like the one you describe.

Have you also noticed that most of the f1 so called truck drvers(truckies) cant drive a truck. they might have the licence but that doesnt make them a driver.

Geoff:

Could say the same about some on general haulage  but I do know where you’re coming from. I know loads of race truckies who have never driven a truck on general haulage or have done the odd few weeks on agency when the racing season is over. I once saw one of the Vauxhall touring car truckies trying to hook-up the trailer, took him ages to get into position. would have been an easy manouvre for any half decent general haulage driver.
However what you must also remember is that damaging the truck is not an option. If it takes an extra shunt or sometimes not bothering trying to park somewhere you’d park a general haulage wagon, We often have problems getting on and off ferries, because of the low belly lockers, this means quite often one of us is standing on the loading ramp watching the bottom of the trailer whilst the other drives it slowly onto or off the boat. Sorry if you’re one of the trucks waiting for us.
