Hi Steve I cant remember Duckhams in that area and i come from Ashton originaly but i do remember Castrol based in Hyde is it these you are thinking of Cheers John.
Hi John, no it defiantly wasn’t Castrol in Hyde as I loaded there a couple of times as Hanson’s who I was working for at the time had a couple of motors on contract to Castrol. I think I did two loads out of there, 80x45 gallons drums for Ellesmere Port on a flat.
Why I asked about Duckham’s was because I dropped a workmate off near Ashton once and as he was getting his gear out of my cab an old bloke very smartly dressed walking his dog stopped to talk to him. Len told me that they both worked together at Duckham’s some years before. It was a very interesting conversation as Len said to him “look I know we were all on the fiddle, we all tried to sneak the odd gallon of oil out between the pallets and if the security man caught you he would often turn a blind eye but how did you afford a holiday abroad every year a new car and a caravan”. The old guy said because the security man never counted the number of pallets and with that the old guy walked away leaving Len gobsmacked.
That’s why John I thought that Duckham’s must of had at least a distribution depot somewhere in the area.
Regards Steve.
Hi. Duckhams had a depot in Manchester, halfway down Red Bank in Cheetham Hill. I used to collect there every day when I drove for Ripponden and District. I was on that " run " in the early 70s. They would give us small consignments for your local type small garages all over Yorkshire. I think Bridges Transport of Preston got the smalls for Lancashire.
Regards John.
IIRC, They were taken over by Castrol Ltd, Regards Larry.
It would seem the original Duckhams oil company was bought out by the oil and petrol giant BP. Duckhams was for a while promoted by BP as a premium engine oil brand. In 2000 BP acquired Burmah-Castrol
BP must have considered the Castrol brand stronger than Duckhams because that is the one they concentrated on, letting the once great name Duckhams fall by the wayside
Still alive and well here in Thailand.
I often use it in my motorbike, Duckhams Q, and it’s still green in colour.
