Duanes Syndrome

Hi,

Basically. I’ve applied for my cat c provisional. An i have a condition called duanes syndrome. This means, my left eye can’t move from centre to left. I have perfect vision acuity and field testing. I didn’t inform the dvla about this 11 years ago when i passed my class b. I’ve never had an at fault crash to date… touch wood  and only had 1 not at fault claim when a mechanic in a class 2 changed lanes into me.

I use my mirrors 99% of the time when parking and manovering my 4x4. and have no issues with visual or perception.

Has anyone any information on what is my likely next course from dvsa?

ps im hoping to get to class 1.

It would seem that you know already dvla should be informed as you state they weren’t informed before when they surely should of been.

So you had this Daunes syndrome prior to you learning to drive, do you wear or need glasses ?

Daunes Syndrome isn’t listed individually on the reportable list of DVLA medical conditions, it could be argued that its under the section either vision in one eye only or visual field defects…

Now before you go running off to the DLVA, Id say get see your GP and an optician, state your case and raise your concerns…get some professional advice from a medical point of view…Then and only then do you inform the DVLA…

This is correct, i suppose i was young and naive and wanted to get my test passed. Id been driving off road since i was 14. Now im older and wiser :unamused: I realise i should have told them then.

It’s a condition i’ve had since birth. I have done some mild research and have noticed it’s not in the list. This was picked up by the gp when i went for my medical. I did give the doctor all the info that i can account for the lack of movement by moving my head. And he did the accuity test (Letters on the wall), also a field test which he said was perfect which was all noted on the D4.

It’s a rare condition that comes in many forms. mine is the ‘good’ type that just affects one movement. i’m just wondering if anyone has had any similar experience.

Thanks guys!!

Id still get an optician just as some additional protection / backup… then you need to come clean with the DVLA

Best advice, got to be better to know where you stand legally.

Keep schtum about it. It’ll be more hassle than it’s worth, especially as the DVLA don’t specifically mention it. If you can pass the eyesight test and pass the driving tests, which involve lots of peripheral mirror checking etc, then you’re good to go.

It may be hassle, but lets say the OP causes a serious accident and then this medical information comes to light, what then?
The OP will be burnt at the cross just like the Glasgow bin lorry driver…

Best cover ya back Dave…as Ive stated get an optician just as some additional protection / backup… then you need to come clean with the DVLA…

You certainly don’t want your collar felt in years to come by the law… even with a minor collision the fuzz will check any medical issues logged with DVLA… and if you haven’t told them and your found out… your whole driving licence will be suspended, so your screwed long term…

and its beggars belief this “Keep schtum” attitude that still exists… hasn’t anything been learnt from the bin lorry crash in Scotland

It’s not something i could not keep schtum about. The doctor picked it up on my medical. I had to tell him then. As he had put down that i had it on my D4 form. I’ve had to send this off to the dvla.

I can check my mirrors and reverse without an issue. People who i’ve known for 10 years still don’t know i have it. It’s just a case of waiting to see what comes back from the dvla.

If they do put the coy bosch on it, I’ll fight till the death  It’s a job i’ve wanted to do since i was a nipper. I’m sure i could argue the fact that i’ve never had an at fault accident since i passed.

I’m also a DS sufferer, have just been diagnosed with this at 35. I have just had to notify the dvla about my condition and am nervously waiting for their verdict. Could you please update me on your case and the outcome of your application.
