Hi Rob. I’ve been scratching my head but can’t for the life of me remember the "enigmatic " gearbox . Which lorries had these fitted ? as I’m sure I must have used one at some point.![]()
Regards. John.Lorries didn’t but DAF 44’s did
Aye remember them well. The DAF variomatic. A couple of drive belts sliding up a cone to provide an infinitely variable ratio. Wonder why that never caught on ■■
Regards. John.

It has caught on - Quite a few manufacturers offer “stepless” or “CVT” automatic transmissions. The main differences between them and the original Daf Variomatic are that they mostly use steel link belts rather than rubber belts, and the control is electronic rather than the rather crude centrifugal controls used by Daf.
Volvo also used the CVT transmission in its 3 series hatchback cars, I think they had taken over the DAF car production facility in Belgium ? at the time. I bought a low mileage 340 GL in 1991 with this transmission and it was a cracking little motor had to have the drive belts changed once in 3 yrs which I didn’t think was too bad for the mileage I was doing.

I find that hard to believe the stupidity, that company has a yard in Bridgnorth and Wolverhampton and he has hit the bridge in Compton on the A454, the road which connects Bridgnorth to Wolverhampton and about 3 miles from the yard?
