My next move is to do the theory test where I will get two chances to pass! then off to Cardington for a 4 week residential course mon to fri! on full pay

Do you know anyone who has took the course? what should I expect?

I feel this will be a good move for me because my Back is past the stage of general transport!
any help will be gladly recieved!!

Also anyone got any of the theory tests on CD■■? I will of course pay for them! that includes car, truck and moterbike!!
cheers!!

Congrats on getting accepted hun… I would imagine that the test is extremely difficult afterall your the one that gives the general joe bloggs public the key to possible destruction… hehe. or of course as most of us are aware a very rewarding job… sometimes (not finanical as such though)

Let us know how it goes when it comes round hun, would be interested in hearing about the experience. ■■

Hi TC,

I was training to be a driving instructor, passed all the theory and did the part 2 driving test but decided it wasn’t for me. I have all the theory books and test sheets from my course if you want them. Just pm me and will get them to you. I think I have a delivery to Safeway at Stockton tomorrow afternoon so you may be able to pick them up there.

regards
Westie

PM sent mate
I apreciate your very kind offer and hope to see you soon!

The congratulations go without saying TC, good luck with the rest  . Once heard at an test centre (after I’d passed).

Examiner to my instructor: “This isn’t a bad job, you don’t get any of the stress, I bet that’s what your paid for Bill.”

Now my instructor has quite a laconic wit, so we get on well togeather :unamused:. His reply?

“You obviousley havn’t met this one yet the   .”

In revenge, I did the lottery numbers on his new gearbox on the way home :open_mouth: ."

Good luck with the rest. Your finally of your rear end (so to speak :grimacing: )

WELL DONE MATE  ALL I CAN SAY IS THANK GOD I’V PASSED MY TEST     NO SERIOUSLY I REALLY HOPE YOU GET IT MATE.
IT WILL GET YOU OUT THE HOUSE ANYWAY AND MAYBE YOU CAN GET THESE SO CALLED CAR DRIVERS UP TO THE STANDARDS OF THE CLASS1 DRIVER,THIS WILL ENSURE THEY UNDERSTAND THE WORKING’S OF AN ARTIC.AND GET THEM TO RESPECT US MORE.GOOD LUCK

Congratulations. I don’t know much about Cardington but I believe that what they will be looking for, apart from driving ability, will be inter-personal skills, team players, and Consistency of Marking.

No doubt the initial driving will be in cars, so consider spending some money on a couple of lessons to brush up your skills. Not just with any ADI, look for one who is qualified as an ORDIT instructor. (Official Register of Driving Instructor Trainers). Alternatively, try IAM Fleet. Again you will have to pay but it will be with a Grade 5 or 6 ADI.

Consider calling in at your local car test centre for a chat. Normally they have their lunch about mid-day. The worst they can say is No.

You may also be able to get some advice on the MSA forum. (Motor Schools Association). You have to APPLY for registration, but if you explain your requirement, they will probably accept you.

You realize of course, that you will have to severely limit your contributions to TNUK, as part of your conditions of employment. Some will say that’s a bad thing, other will say… :astonished:

Best of luck.

Thanks for that Krankee!!!

It has made very interesting reading for me!

I have seen the contracts of employment and they is a small bit that states that all DSA business must be kept presonal and no information can be divulged.
but no where does it state employee’s cannot contribute to web-sites such as this!! as long as I do not talk about DSA business! If I get that far I will be asking the relevent people!

I know from the information I have been given that all examiners, must do a certain lenth of time in cars before LGV’s!

I will keep you informed, If I can!

My landlady is a DSA examiner, or rather she did the training, passed all her exams on bikes and cars, but found she can earn more as a self employed instructor.

Sad state of affairs really, but it is probably a job for life.

As already said, I believe it is a lot more than driving, you need to know how to put people at ease, how to read and interpret road markings, signs, borders and shapes.

You could practice your skills on here and try to calm us lot down :stuck_out_tongue:

Good Luck T.C.

Make sure you do not pass the same face several times in different names

As if this would happen in England :exclamation: :exclamation:

Cheers,

Niall.

TC, I took the ‘Cardington Special Driving Test’ a number of years back when I was an Approved Driving Instructor (ADI).

To be perfectly honest, I failed. The standards they expect are EXTREEMLY high but not impossible to achieve. I believe that preperation for this aspect of your course is paramount, however, by the time you get to Cardington, they will have invested enough in you to make sure that your driving standards are excellent, at least.

The DSA handbook is their rule book and they expect it to be followed implicitly. You will not be allowed to ignore any aspect of this book, disagree with anything that it says or interpret what it teaches in any way other than what they tell you… do so at your peril. Your years of experience will count for nothing, you will have to strip down and examine every aspect of your own driving and develop the style of driving that is taught in the DSA handbook.

As has already been mentioned, this is only one aspect of the four week course at Cardington, your people skills are also very important.

IAM are good, ROSPA have always been better, if you got to their Gold standard, you would be better than the Instructors at Cardington… well, maybe!

As a matter of interest, I failed on the following:

  1. Failure to make sufficient progress… too slow on a motorway, I thought I was driving at a speed appropriate to the road and traffic conditions, but apparently not. The speed limit was 70mph, but it was as clear as a bell and I kept it to a steady 55/56mph to be economical, I was not in any rush… BIG mistake.

  2. Incorrect road position… on a roundabout, I straight lined it, taking the most convenient route through, as per Police Class 1 recommendations. Can you see the dilemma here? They do not want you to follow any other style of advanced driving, other than that which is laid down in their own hanbook.

  3. Incorrect road position… on a ‘mini’ roundabout, my rear off-side wheel went over the ‘flat’ edge of a white painted circle… I could discuss how ridiculous this was but, its a clear indication of the standards that they expect.

Good luck, I hope this helps, its not that difficult and if there are any issues with your driving, I know they will coach you accordingly…

Terry

Congratulations TC, I’m very pleased for you and hope it all goes well.
