With reference to the driver caught by the Police on the TV documentary, most ex European drivers would say it was the “norm” to get drunk on a ferry crossing, and in some cases be over the limit prior to or after boarding at the ports. However, not recently,i am on about the era of the 80s and 90
s,and not on short ferry trips like Dover/Calais.I would see the guys up all night leaning on the bar,and did wonder how they get their trucks off the ship without wrecking the ship. For some reason, with a rough sea crossing, they would drink more. The Bilbao/Santander service, would enable the alcholol limit to be reduced on leaving the port, due to the length of the trip.Caen(Ouistreham),Le Havre/St.Malo/Cherbourg/Dieppe,would be a few drinkers on those routes.
With respect, I think what you are talking about has no relation to the MRS driver,
As the employer of many drivers using ferries during the 70’s/80’s/90’s, I knew that many of them sailed very
close to the wind and would not have liked to breathe in the bag when leaving the port the following morning - and
yes, I think it did go on on the short sea routes also.
By the MRS driver - a complete lunatic alcoholic in my opinion - 9% strength lager whilst driving and almost three times over the limit? I’m bloody glad they got him before he ran into my family!
Good riddance to his like I say

knowall, i agree with you. scum like that wants locking up for ever.
Many who did it on the Sheerness Vlissingen crossing would find them self donating a breath specimen to the Dutch police first thing in the morning, often followed by a large donation of guilders and a prolonged stay in the port to sleep it off. It was very rare to disembark and not find the police there waiting to breathalyise drivers at random, and if you were one of the last off or were late getting off due to oversleeping you could guarantee you would be chosen
You’ve got me going now
Futhermore, it was an 18 month ban right?
Crazy stuff that ■■■■■■ should be banned for life - you could get 18 months ban
for being a little bit over the morning after for christ sake.
Pity they didnt give his name so we could all be aware for 18 months time.

The comedian Frankie Carson was on the Stena Normandie,Southampton/Cherbourg on New Years Eve,there was a lot of drivers that should have parked up after that knees up all night.
Can someone explain why the pollish driver did not get done for drink driving.
If that was me i would be done and baned for 18 monthes
He was over the limit but only charged with drunk in charge of a motor vehicle and got 9 points
I am totally confused
