I’ve been driving a 2014 Merc and the tachograph automatically goes into other work as soon as you stop for traffic lights/queues etc (so I’m assuming they do not count as your driving time).
Starting with an agency Thursday, do all digital tachos do this? I only ask because they’ve never given a drive which according to my satnav will take 9 hours 44 minutes but take off time stopping at traffic lights and junctions…
Yes they all do that,if they have given you a route that is planned to take 9h45 there is not a chance you will get it done in one day’s driving,9h45 planned WILL be at least 10h15 in real life due.
It doesn’t take time off, simply records driving, I.e moving. All tachos do this. The new ones record seconds rather than rounding up to the minute and make a hell of a lot of difference.
Sorry guys showing my inexperience here. I was putting them in the order they gave me the drops. Re arranged it all and got it down to 5 hours 45 mins.
Also I’m going to be carrying fresh meat and chilled foods, is it my job to set the temperate or what? Worried I’ll mess it up or not know how to set it…
They will tell you the temp it needs to be set at,or ask.
It should be set already but make sure before you leave that it is,a quick question is better than a ruined load.

Do the trip in the order they gave you, not the order you think it should be done, its in the order they gave you for a reason. There will no doubt be specified booking times for certain drops, if it takes longer, so be it … especially if your getting paid by the hour

And as others have said do drops the way they want it done. First thing to learn is you are paid to drive, not make decisions, do what they ask you to do and all will go well.
ROG:
EU regs driving is when the vehicle is moving
Not true.
EH?
I mean you’re wrong.
The definition of driving time for the EU Driver’s Hours Regulations is, and always has been as follows:
‘driving time’ means the duration of driving activity recorded: automatically or semi-automatically by the recording equipment as defined in Annex I and Annex IB of Regulation (EEC) No 3821/85, or manually as required by Article 16(2) of Regulation (EEC) No 3821/85;
With type 1 digital tachos a whole minute could be recorded as driving time when in fact the vehicle has only been moving for a few seconds during that minute.
With the newer type 2 units you could drive for 29 seconds of a calendar minute and be stopped for the remaining 31 seconds and that entire minute will not be recorded as driving.
So with one type driving is recorded while the vehicle is stationary and with the other type driving isn’t recorded while it is moving.
So, for the EU regs driving is not defined as when the vehicle is moving, it’s simply the amount of time recorded as driving by the tacho, or by a manual entry.

No, they don’t all “default” to other work - they can be changed so the default is rest. I drove for a firm recently where this happened and the boss explained he could never remember to select the bed symbol when he took a break, so he had the default changed (this can be done only at certain, authorized places), so that if challenged (by DVSA or Police), he could look at his diary to see when he took a break and marry it up. It was difficult to explain the amount of “Breaks” I took while in the queue caused by an accident…
There’s a difference between making things simple and giving duff information.
With the new type 2 tacho in stop/start traffic it would be possible to clock up several minutes with the vehicle moving but not actually record any driving time with the way it assigns each minute to the activity with the most amount of time in the minute.
Oh, and you also simplified it too much for the Domestic Regulations and got that wrong as well.
