Driving without digi card in

Can anyone help i’ve heard that you can drive a certain distance from your base without a card in. Is this true? If so does anyone know the distance. Thanks

If lost or Stolen, you need to contact DVLA for an authorization number and take a print out at the start of the day and end signing the print out. And drive as normal.

If you mean can I drive the unit with in my pocket for any distance? the answer is NO. You could move a rigid around within your deport, if you were a shunter for example.

It depends on what type of work you do, there are exemptions from the EU regulations for certain types of work.

If you can let us know more about what your job entails and the type of goods you carry we may be able to answer more precisely.

edit: Alternatively have a look at the exemptions on page 13 here

What about if you break down and are provided with another vehicle, but can’t get your tacho out of the old one ? Is that possible ? (Snapped key, couldn’t turn ignition on to eject card scenario)

Then you just deal with it as you would if your card was lost or stolen

I wouldn’t push it much further than holland mate, just to be safe.

I’ve no idea whether it’s bs or not but it’s perfectly feasible if he’s on domestic regulations, plenty of people are

The wording for that please. No hearsay.

I think I was told that some of them (but not all) have little holes you can poke a pin into to manually eject a card.

you can still eject the card with the ignition off, the only thing that doesn’t work is the backlight! The tacho does go to “sleep” but wakes up when you press any button and will operate normally!

you don’t need an authorization number all they told me to do is send the card along with the form and i could drive as long as i take a printout at the start and end and write my name, license number and sign it to confirm the details were correct.

Not on all. It depends on the job of the truck / how it’s been set up. Some allow you to eject with the ignition off, some don’t.

I think it’s something to do with ADR spec trucks IIRC, but can’t remember the exact reasoning for it now.

The only circumstance that one may legally drive a truck on a public road minus a digi-card is if the said card is lost/mislaid. In that event you have to do a print-out at the beginning and the end of the shift, a replacement card has to be applied for immediately, or as soon as humanly possible. I believe that there is a fortnight grace in which to do this. A word of warning may be given here. Don’t leave the ‘till-roll’ exposed to daylight as it’s light sensetive over quite a short time, and MrVosa won’t believe that you’ve been maintaining a proper record over the given period, and will react accordingly…

FTFY

Tachograph, any actual rule or wording that allows driving without digi in if the card is stuck in another vehicle ?

How have you got it stuck in another vehicle ■■

Rip the bloody thing out

And as for your O Question …

I know 30 years ago we would get away with putting a card in after booking off if we popped into town to get food etc then returned to park up at the same place as we had dropped the trailer as long as it was only a short distance and min time say 20 min .
