Driving with diabetes

Cheers.
How long all the application process has taken then?

Last year was about 10 weeks. All the consultant appointments fell In to place perfectly, plus there was a DVLA consultant at Queens Nottingham obviously where I am.
Sent off reapplication last week and awaiting next step. This year I sent of my bloods with the forms hoping to save a bit of time.
The time consuming bit is the appointments, believe there’s one at Sheffield also.
You ll get there, granted though they can drag their heels. As long as my application is in and there’s no major blood sugar irregularities and all criteria is met (no hypos at the wheel & not needing or needed help when having hypos)then I may still be able too drive after its expiry on April 14th even though I’m awaiting the consultant appointment. They will confirm nearer the time.
Are you applying for the first time since diagnosis?

No, this is a second time.

First time took 7 months. 3 months for the routine medical, then one month waiting for appointment for gp, one month for decision and appointment for specialist and the another month for the final decision.

I can sympathise with you there. Admittedly it must be frustrating and I’m sure I would feel exactly the same.
For all the years I’ve been in Notts I told my GP and Consultant about my HGV situation very early on. They are fully aware what it meant to me having lost it and agreed that being diabetic I was no more a hazard than Mr Joe Public.
That said this year my 6 monthly check up appointment was made in anticipation of the renewal date.
On the other hand though driving is not my full time vocation due to the uncertainties surrounding the license criteria(1 year at a time) so for me it can take as long as it wants as I only do casual tramping every 6 weeks and maybe the odd day inbetween.

Gently remind them of your situation and the need for a quick turn around as it’s your livelyhood at the end of the day. Has DVLA let you continue driving while they make a decision?
Don’t let them/it get you down.

I haven’t passed the driving test yet. And because of waiting for it to come, I cannot book retest.
Quite a pain in the arsenal, although not giving up yet as I have come this far.
Been mentioning my situation for them every time on the phone, but it doesn’t speed up the progress.
For the next round I think I am wiser and maybe get it done faster, maybe…

Evening, I am awaiting tests for Diabetes after being diagnosed with Bells Palsy thankfully not a Stroke !

I am also worried about losing my Licence but if the worse happens can I still drive a Sprinter Van for courier work ?
Thanks in advance from wonky face !!

My 10yr old Son just been diagnosed with type1 on Fri night and currently in Ulster Hospital while they try to get his bloods down to normal,
was 33 when I tested him for 1st time on Fri evening :exclamation: :exclamation:
Bit of a shock for our family as all he had as symptoms were just drinking slightly more than normal.

I myself feel I’m borderline type2 as tested myself first thing Sat morn and was 16 and I’ve since studied the Jason Fung ideology on Youtube and agree with his studies (“Caveman living” I’d call it  ) and really am ready to try the “intermittent fasting” to get insulin levels down.

Take it 1st 24hrs is the worst
How much water per day 4litres

Hard to believe world record for fasting is 384 days and I think its held by a
Scotsman who was seriously obese :exclamation: :exclamation: :open_mouth:

My mate, who has a normal licence, and who I have known for 30 years, has just had his driving licence taken off him by the DVLA and it is a European ruling thing. He was insulin dependent, and has had a pump for some years now. I believe that ALL persons who have a licence, and a are diabetics, will lose or have lost their entitlement to drive under the new ruling with a slim or no chance of getting it back. At 51 he is devastated. I would imagine that HGV licence holders will have more chance of a trip to the moon, than keeping their licences. He is trying to fight it through Diabetes UK, but not having much luck so far, and Diabetes UK know all about this ruling.

You have been warned.

Ken.

I am type2 and i had my licence revoked end of June because i wasnt testing levels often enough. An expensive lesson. :frowning:

Don’ t know how that “ruling” can be enforced.
Recently had two nephews both type1 with insulin injections and just passed car driving tests and full licence granted without too much bother.

HGV might be a diff matter granted!!!
