Driving Standards

Here’s a little gripe that I’ve had for a long time…

If we’re “professional” drivers, how come it can take 6 miles to pass one another■■?

Come on, folks! If the waggon behind is trying to come past, back off a tad! Take it down to 50-ish and let them on through! You won’t be late at your next tip/load if just have a bit of consideration. Also, you’ll start to alter the “stigma” of us Professional Drivers as being boorish; inconsiderate; rude; and downright ignorant.

And anyway, it’s one helluva laugh watching BMW drivers get confused when you’re polite to them and let them out… Try it sometime, it can really make your day! :smiling_imp:

Saying all that, however, doesn’t mean that you have to kowtow to all drivers. If you’re in town and can see a tight turn up ahead, command the road! Keep them behind you, safely of course, and when they twig what’s going on and what your trailler would’ve done to them if they’d been alongside, they’ll be be more inclined to take notice of other waggons.

Above all, let’s change the attitude of the General Public towards us. We know that we’re as popular as the Police and Traffic Wardens to them, but if we can let them see that we’re keeping their safety in mind, they might be more considerate and respectful towards us. And that will make our job easier!

And, after all, isn’t that what we all want?

I consider that to be very professional actually.

Usually I take at least 20 miles… and the A1 is my favourite.

What do you mean, 'START to alter the “stigma” of us Professional Drivers as being boorish; inconsiderate; rude; and downright ignorant.

Er   No.

Sorry Helio, but while I agree with the principle of what you are saying, hanging back on a long motorway journey can make a big diffference at the other end. Maybe getting tipped or not, and if that’s Friday afternoon, you could be weekended.
Also, dropping your speed even only a little will encourage others who up till now were going your speed or even slower behind, to overtake you and then you have to ease off for them. Where does it all end?
Truckers are in this position because of the stupid way speed limiters are designed. A simple temporary overide, impossible to maintain for more than say, five minutes, would solve most of these problems, including bunching and bad tempers. Well, maybe not solve, but it would help.

Salut, David.

or use ‘the wire’ …

wot speed limiter, Boss■■?

Absolutely no chance   I get more pleasure keeping them behind me getting annoyed. It make’s my day if i can upset a BMW driver or an Audi driver.

Why should it always be the vehicle being overtaken that should slow down?

It annoys me when I overtake a slow vehicle on an uphill section, they overtake me on the flat but are clearly able to see another uphill gradient ahead, knowing they will slow down again. THEY should be the ones to hold back.

I’ve never seem tham confused, they just ignore you like everyone else. No wave, nothing. Doesn’t tempt me to do it again.

OK.OK.OK.

I get the picture!!!

However, the mere fact that I’ve so many replies in such a short time indicates that it’s a very sore point with us all.

I love the idea of an “override” switch! :sunglasses: The only trouble is how many of the “Not So Respectable” amongst us will find a way to set it on permanently?

As for being weekended, think of the money!!! Seriously, I’ve been there and done that, and it’s not much fun, but whoever said this job was easy… LIED!

My other half had no idea about the amount of room we need until I showed her. This is, unfortunately, the basic mind set of the average car driver. Perhaps something in the driving test to show us/them what is what? Or even educating driving instructors in the ways of Trucks? Mine never told me about artics. I learnt the hard way, when I took my Class 1 Test.

Has anyone else got any ideas on how to stop silly cars from winding up in the “elbow” of an artic on mini-roundabouts■■? This has happened to me and it took a large crane and a loads of Police, who could’ve been better employed catching the REAL crooks, to sort it out. The car driver was so ignorant that he refused to move, stating that I could move to let him through…! This is what we’re up against, folks!

Has anyone else got any ideas on how to stop silly cars from winding up in the “elbow” of an artic on mini-roundabouts

Yes take all car’s off the road   problem solved

Maybe this would solve all the problems!

Maybe this would solve all the problems!

Is that a new prototype Scania? It certainly looks like they have improved them this time :stuck_out_tongue:

A serious point, the car drivers need to be educated on their driving tests, they should all be made to ride a 2 wheeler for 6 months before getting a provisional car licence. It makes you realise how vulnerable you are instead of being coccooned behind air bags, seat belts and no “no win no fee” vultures

FOR THOSE of the truck-net site who visit Germany; IT IS LAW THAT when overtakeing you must be doing 10kmh more than the vehicle who you wish to overtake,if found not to be doing the required actions, the nice
Mr Police man will if he catches you ask for a smallsum of money to help
the ailing german ecomeny, normal sum asked for is about 40-75euros++
not forgetting the points that will be added to your account in the GERMAN
DVLC office in Flensburg, so be warned,

They should definately be tested on speed limits for hgv’s in the theory test, at the very least.

Maybe this would solve all the problems!

Don’t show this to the boss for Gods sake!!!

He’ll want us all to drive one to save fuel!!!

I think he was referring to the link I gave him. If so, this is the rest of the site, and superb it is too.

Yeah, I probably should have read the post properly!
