Hi my employer is putting me through my class 2 and they are wondering if they can take me out on L’s just as a bit of practice as I allready have a PSV. They have taken people out before but it was a few years ago so there not sure if the law has changed? And also would I have to put a tacho in?
It’s fine subject to insurance. You have to be accompanied by a driver who has held the category for at least 3 years. No tacho required if soley practice. Tacho required if doing “work” with the truck.
But it may not be possible to take a test on the truck due to minimum test vehicle requirements.

If it is not used for commercial purposes for the duration of the training-to-get-a-licence drive from and back to the depot then NO tacho required legally BUT the company would probably like you to use one and select or mark it out-of-scope so they can keep track of the mileage etc
This is a great opportunity to get a head start with your training and you should grab it with both hands.
A word of caution: the guy sat at the side of you will probably be a very competent and experienced driver who will do his utmost to help you. But it’s doubtfull he’ll be up to date with the requirements of the test.
So, if I were you, use this opportunity to get comfy with the size of the vehicle and it’s general handling (rate of acceleration and braking) and don’t do much more.
You could get confused with gearboxes unless you’re lucky enough to make a start on a truck with a similar gearbox to the training vehicle.
Many would eat their right arm for this start; you are fortunate and I hope it’s a great help.
