Am I hearing right, could have sworn I heard driving licences are being scrapped in a matter of weeks or am I wrong
I am right, just heard that it’s the counterpart that’s being scrapped, ignore the to bit on the heading predictatex. Beat me to it
The counter part is to be scrapped in Jan been around a while now

Yeh it’s correct, licences are obsolete, they are now allowing any brainless moron ( that once would have been disqualified on those grounds) to drive an artic, those that were deemed unemployable at one time.
Oh no that is wrong, just realised they have been doing that for last 10 years or so.
Good news for me then. Got asked last week for both parts for the bi monthly licence check, couldn’t find counterpart so contacted DVLA who informed me that as they have to match (summat to do with serial numbers) I’d have to pay for a whole replacement licence.
So hopefully if I hide for a month or so I should escape this then?
haven’t got it to hand but when googling for any info on this there is also a link to allow you check your licence details, categories, expiry dates, endorsements etc on line.

Did they explain that the replacement fee has been reduced from £20 to £14, which is good news for you if you don’t manage to hide for a month or so!!!
Of course come January the reduced fee will only buy you a photocard alone - no counterpart…the Good Lord giveth & then he takes away!!! Or was it Jesus saves…Toshack scores the rebound!!!

like it
NO it is not being scrapped, and heres the reason: A reporter on the bbc breakfast show this morning telephoned DVLA to clarify the position and this is what she said and I quote… :
The Counterpart is the one being scrapped, but not for everyone and not for now. IF you have a counterpart now, keep it, and you will still have to keep it or produce it. It will not be scrapped, If you have to change your licence, or change the address on your licence or if you are applying for a licence, you will not be given a counterpart. In the future licences will be changed to a modern one with all the details enclosed within a chip, but no date has been set for this.
I intend doing my medical via the DVLA photo replacement scheme next year Ahem So looks like I’ll get shot of the pesky paper bit at the same time, good good
If you have the current paper and card license it will still be valid and you will still need to show both parts. If you are applying for a renewal or a new category then you will only get the card one back.
My licence expires in February and I have renewed it online today, one very good thing is that as I will be 70 in February it’s free
Renewing online for a basic car licence is very easy, do not even need to provide a photograph if you have a passport, they just use your passport photograph. As part of the renewal process I have to cut up and return both parts of the licence.
However I do have some concerns regarding the counterpart not being issued after January, every car hire company I have ever used abroad, and I have used a lot, require the hirer to produce the counterpart before you can have a car. I checked with 3 hire companies today in Cyprus (We are going there in March) and they will still require the counterpart to be produced. Only Europcar were aware of the change and they will charge me 10euros to check my licence details online.
Using the link posted earlier I can check my own details and print before I go but I do not know if that will be acceptable.
(All this only applies to the basic car licence, I stopped renewing my LGV after I retired)
Truckyboy and Radar. That link says that anyone with a card and paper counterpart can destroy the paperpart. Where did you read we have to keep both parts? Not being sarky or anything…I just want to know for sure before I can stop carrying my falling to bits paper bit. Cheers lads.
