Driving jobs that don't want you working long hours

do they exist? What kind of driving job can you just go in, get the work done and be finished 8 hours later?

only reason I work through the agency is so I don’t have to commit to 50+ hour weeks (and expected to work 6 days every 2nd week)

I’d actually prefer a part time permanent job but part time in the HGV world is full time hours anywhere else!

I have been there done that as have many on here I guess…60 hours a week every other Saturday  Same as you at the moment I don’t need the long hours etc…I work on the local refuse council contract driving/loading etc…40 hours paid anything over is flat rate but if you don’t work 40 you still get paid 40!!! The most I have done is 47 and the least 37…Although I did work yesterday to help out on catch up missed services…my choice and a few extra beer tokens  Got to say…I really enjoy it Mon - Fri 0630 start!!!

I’m changing from nights to days company only want me to work mon- Thurs start 10.00 finish 19.00 that will do for me. They have no issue if I want to work for an agency on the Friday or cover holidays of other drivers on the Friday.

Nobby d, morrisons bellshill, 8 hours and thats you, horrible place, the driver isnt allowed to think for himself, you aren’t allowed to do more than 80kmh you aren’t allowed to deviate from the route, you aren’t allowed out of the cab at the stores, the people are nice but the culture has evolved into drivers sticking drivers in if the cab smells of anything ie smoke or food, you get a lecture if you dont produce more than 3.5km per litre regardless what weight you are pulling or where you are sent.
8 hours feels like 15 hours.
It suits some people, not me though.

That’s what I fancy doing but pay not very good unfortunately, I bet it’s interesting though.

I am in a similar situation in that I only want to work about 20/30 hours per week, although I am quite happy to get those hours done in 2 or 3 days. I work for an agency too, as in theory you are supposed to be able to pick and choose your hours. It can still be a battle with them when they phone and ask you to do more shifts than you want. They are always “struggling to get anyone else”. That is when I know the job is going to be a crap one!

It’s bloody hard work too. Be prepared to be messed around, do stupid amounts of handball, get wet, deal with awkward customers, re-stack pallets of bricks and blocks, get moaned at by site foremen and ignored by forklift drivers, and prat about doing the same safety assessments and inductions every time you visit a site. You never get any peace off the gaffer either.

But it can be interesting. At least you don’t get nights out.

If you can get up early then be a bread rat. Job & knock work, regular run, pretty well paid. Allied & Roberts have night drivers these days knocking about in artics doing store deliveries.

Plenty of trunking jobs without long hours as well.

I rarely do more than a 6hour day, not many jobs like mine around though Im afraid! Its small family firm, and its job then knock. Its not uncommon to be home by 11am. I start at 8am!
Jobs like it do exist, you just gotta be in the right place at the right time.

Used to work at Jewsons both on the road and as yard/transport foreman. Worked pretty hard to get the drops done. 8-5 and every other Saturday wages wasn’t bad for the time and you knew what you was doing so you could make plans for weekends etc.

We’re do you live I’m
Always looking for Class 2 drivers you are always back to depot every day. We operate from Alcester, Warwickshire
Drop you number and name.

Bin mon :sunglasses: :sunglasses:

The best jobs are still going to be 8 hour shifts where you get paid for 15, no deduction for meal breaks, get to spend 3 hours on POA asleep at some non-abuser depot (already mentioned above) and you get an hour or two’s job and knock at the end of it as well… Oh… your hourly rate is at least double the minimum wage, and it’s Overtime after 8 hours paid per day as well, triple time and a day off in lieu for working bank holidays, and time and a half after 7pm… :stuck_out_tongue:

All this might have come to pass by now, like it did for Utility workers, train drivers, & Court officials - if it were not for the continued existance of the cunservative party…

Let’s face it folks - When crap becomes money - our apathetic driver’s arses will still deny us our own perceived birthrights - by healing up! :frowning: :frowning:

The place i work now does waste management (I.e landfills, recycling plants, scrap yards etc) so you cant do silly hours as the places you go to tend to be only open between 7-8am till 4-5pm so that restricts the hours you can do.

Warrens -to many 10-12 hours shift.
Nft Sainsbury,Stobart Chill (Lutterwoth),Co-op in Coventry.,Carlsberg. and to many many more in this “gold triangle”.yes every company some time possible long hours but normaly just 8-10 hours per shift

Yes of course they exist. But they are the minority. As the o.p. says most firms arent happy with 60hrs a week they want 70+ out of you.
I am on agency for the same reason. I do 3 or 4, 12 hour shifts then thats me done. I got offered a full time job couple of weeks ago. The guy admitted the money wasn`t great, but…you make it up with working every other Sunday! Brilliant!
I declined.
