Hi Guys. I’m sure i’ve read on here some time back of UK trucks having been to China, but the driver having to park up at the border whilst his trailer is taken in & tiipped by a local truck.
Is this still the case?
On another forum of which i a member, we are looking into the possibility of driving to Thailand in a 4 x 4.
Best route suggestion so far seems to be Russia, Mongolia (lack of hard roads), China, Laos, Thailand.
China started accepting the International Driving License in 2007 and visitors can also get a Chinese temporary driving license for a limited period of up to three months. To get a temporary license you need to take lessons to study Chinese road safety regs, and it only applies to small vehicles.
Hi Neil
yes, that concurs with what i’ve read elsewhere, though as yet its unclear if you can drive on an IDP alone, or have to do the theory (available in English in cities) & then swop it for a Chinese license. It seems to depend on the individual copper, some accept the IDP alone it seems.
Any idea what the defination of a “small vehicle” is? We’re thinking LWB Shogun size here.
I would suggest you go on Amazon and buy a book called “The Road to Beijing” by David Brayshaw
