A quick question/s really as I’m following up on my previous thread of whether companies still pay to put people through their heavy goods licenses. Although this is more of a question that will potentially affect my future thanks to the help of my Dad. As a friend of his owns a haulage firm, and my dad asked whether he would be able to put me through this apprenticeship as the friend in question knows I’ll be giving everything I have into it but he wants more information on the apprenticeship first so I thought I would use the aid of trucknet to help me, whether it be from people who have been through the apprenticeship or trainers on here who maybe provide it.
The questions that are being asked are thus
Will it cost him anything?
Can I do distance work when on the apprenticeship e.g not having to be running round the doors?
I can do both my Cat C & C+E through the same apprenticeship?
Also how long would training take through Cat C & C+E assuming I passed first time etc?
Sorry if it seems all over the place but I was only told yesterday and it’s still a bit to take in as it’s a great chance imo. I will be calling round during the week around the training companies to get more information from them but I thought I would ask the questions here first .
wttl.co.uk/wttl-courses/appr … ourse=NDY= is this info any help? I looked at this before i had mine ill look to see if i stll have the emails they sent me with info.
Why don’t you get your dad to fund your licenses ?,then when you pass pay him back an agreed nominal fee per week or per month, then that way you will not be tied to any employer for any contracted period as you most certainly will be on an apprenticeship scheme or have i missed something here?.

At such a young age (18?) the advantage will be a job at the end of it and it is unlikely that it will tie into a contract passed the age of 25
At age 25 and with over 2 years experience he will then be in a good position to move to another job if wanting to
This is very like the, now redundant, young drivers scheme
This type of scheme is the way things should be done but I suspect that these days the employer can pay £2.60p per hour during the apprenticeship time … not certain of that
Obviously I will have my test passed before christmas my driving instructors words not mine so he must have faith in my driving. And I have my theory test booked so, half way there already. But it’s something more to work for.

That’s exactly why I’m doing it, because I know I’ll have a job for a year or 2 so it’s valuable experience as well. And my dads not financially able to pay my licenses so that’s also another reason. It’s purposely because I know the work my dad’s friend does and it’s that itself that attracts me to the potential offer at hand
sorry to put a downer on you here johnny but if i was you i would concentrate more on getting your car licence at this time
then take sumtime learning how to drive a car without sumone there to correct you or show where your going wrong every couple mins, this is were you will learn the stuff no one can teach you but this is only my opinion (which her in doors says counts for nowt)
It’s great to have dreams. And I don’t doubt you will succeed in living the dream.
But there is a lot of difference driving yourself around with no-one beside you to coach you. You learn all your mistakes (and believe me you will) in the first couple of years and be a lot more prepared for commercial driving.
I’m not putting you off Johnny. Just pointing out some pitfalls in your plan.
I know you ain’t gonna listen to a guy twice your age, so I wish you all the best
Give system traning a look mate their the guys who are running the apprenticships for stobarts, and I’m sure they run apprenticships for just about anyone who’s got a company to pay for it might be worth having a look at, system-training.com/
I’m not wanting the apprenticeship because I’ll have someone there beside me, I’m doing it because it’s guaranteed employment for at least 2 years. And like any job you make mistakes and you learn from those to not do it again. But at the age of 21/22 having 2 years experience is a good advantage for other jobs should I decide to go elsewhere.
And baring in mind I am going to finish through my apprenticeship with Clipper so I will have experience driving too and from Knottingley to Selby which I know isn’t too glamorous or tricky but still it’s there. Plus my Uncle made a joke that once I pass my test as with part of my family living in Dunbar and knowing the route by heart near enough to drive up there then phone the parents to let them know I’m there But after an unfortunate turn of events it’s something I’m thinking of doing in his memory.
Sorry the posts all over but it’s all I can say this moment in time.
