Driving Bin Lorries

What are the drawbacks of driving bin lorries? bin men giving hassle? reversing down narrow lanes?

The bin guys usually inform the driver where to go and what to do cos each round is different

Hassle will be with impatient drivers

I was told by one ex bin wagon driver that the binmen want to get finished asap, and so push the drivers to go faster… plus wanting to be dropped off near their homes near the end of the shift… could have been just a one off bad experience though

Maybe that does happen but if it does then its up to the driver to say no way if unsafe

yea… prefer bein on my own when driving for that reason. had a driver’s mate on one contract. never again.lol

Yep, all true, but as Rog says, it’s all down to you, you are the Captain of the Ship, most of 'em are ok, so don’t let the odd Numpty Bully you into doing Stupid stuff.

Good practice in tight spots, but it doesn’t half stink & dealing with Arrogant Members of the Public isn’t much fun either.

what sort of things they moan about? blocking roads/drives? not putting bin back outside proper house?

Could be anything, you know what some people are like

Yep, they will moan about everything, too sunny, too hot, too cold, too wet, too slippery, too far to walk, too heavy, too early, too late, too sober, too drunk, too high, too low, too slow, too fast, too too too too too Bloody TOO :unamused: :unamused: :unamused: :unamused: :unamused: :unamused:

I was foreman for a year in MK, working for Serco & the management were next to useless. I tried my hardest to stop the drivers ‘Rally Driving’ over the tip (they seemed to think that they were driving the General Lee)

But the management wouldn’t have any of it & let them carry on regardless, wrecking the wagons in the process, I nearly jacked the job over that little incident.

The crews were on drugs or drink half the time & wouldn’t listen to a word we were saying, that’s what you get when you are dealing with a lot of people with fairly low IQ’s. Some of them will talk to you like a Dog, but most are ok. Disciplinary’s were nearly every day for the smallest thing-No Gloves, not wearing a shirt, being late, carrying too many bags, putting the bags in piles to make it easier to load  , swearing & arguing with residents, accidents, drugs, drink, they even had an Illegal immigrant working on a crew for about 4 years !

Most of the time you get finished early (job & finish, that why they tear around) but bank holidays are a nightmare, sometimes 3 loads to the tip & MRF (10 miles apart in MK) they take at least an hour for a round trip & back to site.

All in all I hated the year that I was there & got out as soon as I saw an opening.
General Haulage, I find is a lot easier.

Today I had 1 hit- MK to Bury St Edmunds back to MK empty, with about 2 hours sleep on the way back. Nice :sunglasses:

thanks to all that replied.

yea I’ll stick to the haulage lol.
