Driving a V6 (ACTROS)

Many has been writing about the technical aspect of a V6 compared with in-line 6.

But what is real life of DRIVING a V6,does the driver feel some difference,it is more
friendly to drive,to maintain?

Edzio.

From a drivers point of view, I always found the V6 to have a slightly laid back approach when driving. The inline 6 in the Axor seemed to have more of a sense of urgency about it when driving it.

It’s shorter, and therefore fits under a short (day) cab better.

But as M-B has now replaced its V engines with straight sixes, I don’t think there was any great advantage. A V engine is probably more complex to make as you have two cylinder banks to deal with.

One of the benefits of a vee engine is the shorter, therefore stronger, crankshaft, the mechanical losses are less, so they’re more efficient, but the difference is so minimal that it makes no difference whatsoever in real life.

The Merc vee engines have a lazy delivery, but that’s more to do with the ECU settings than anything else and quite often the throttle position sensor needs a bit of fine tuning or the throttle pedal feels a bit dead.

I’ve driven plenty of Mercs through the years, both as a driver and as a road tester and they drive exactly the same as a straight six, they do lug down nicely, but then so do plenty of in line sixes

They do make a better sound than an in line tho

Well over the years they have tried the V10,V8 and the V6 but now they have finally come to their senses and dumped that “V” rubbish out of balance tripe for a proper straight 6.

Only problem is,is that it has steel pistons. What TF ?

You got to give it to Merc they will try any old crap out but it takes them years to get anything right.eg auto (laugh) box built by ZF and cocked up by MB.

I like my v6 just could do with a remap
