Driving a 7.5 t horse box as a favour - help

No idea how i have been conned into this but misses has said i will driver her mates horse box to Manchester tomorrow to pick up a horse. No prob - as long as i dont have to touch the thing thats fine BUT the box is fitted with a tacho in - she does not use it as its for her private use.

I am not being paid, what do i need to do ? use a tacho, not use a tacho ? oh and anyone got any tips on having a horse on the back, cause i sure as hell dont know how to strap that so it dont move !

although i have never driven horses i would imagine you would drive it as though you were driving on ice ie: keep it smooth and gentle on all your manouvering

There was a picture put on here about 4 weeks ago showing how to strap a cow should be the same if you can find it.

I’m sure Clint Monkwood will be along and tell you later.

AFAIK, you dont need the tacho since your not doing it as “hire or reward” although il stand corrected if anyone knows better (probably  )
The sticking point maybe that your moving someone elses property.
Ive moved my mrs’ nags before, its a ball ache as you gota drive it like you have a dozern eggs loose on the floor behind!
Good luck

As long as the vehicle doesn’t exceed 7.5 tonnes MAM and you’re not being paid for the job you can use it for private use, so no tachograph is needed (Article 3.h - (EC) 561/2006)

I’ve no idea about securing a horse, I’d probably rope it to the back of the vehicle and let it run behind but your misses might have other ideas

I wonder if they’ll load it with a fork lift ■■

At least you will have a means of transport if you break down.

Pete.

This site may be of help horseandhound.co.uk/forums/index.php but if I was doing that then I would take someone with me who knows how to secure a horse in a 7.5 tonner correctly and who knows what to do if there are any issues during the travelling

If you break down on the road then are there vehicle and horse insurance rescues in place? - carry those contact numbers

As already said - if the vehicle is not more than 7.5 tonnes GVW and is not being used for commercial purposes and there is no intent to, or make profit from it, then its EU regs exempt - same as driving your private car

But what about your certificate of competence to transport animals,Or do you not need one?

Short journeys

Journeys over 40 miles (65km) and duration up to 8 hours must hold a Type 1Transporter authorisation.
Must be in possession of a certificate of competence
Must have appropriate staff and equipment to transport horses

The IMPORTANT bit -
these rules affect people who are in business who transport horses and other associated animals for financial gain

They do not apply to private users

i hope your joking about stapping the horse in :open_mouth: :open_mouth: :open_mouth:

firstly you don’t need tacho as private use, as other have said, i hope someone is going with you that knows something about horses,
depending upon the layout of the box it would be up to you which stall to use, personally if carrying one i would put it up the front.
it will have a head collar on and attached to that will be a lead rein which you half hitch to the piece of baler twine attached to the internal rings.
don’t connect the lead rein directly to the rings because if the horse falls down you could end up hanging it.
make sure it has travel boots on so that it doesn’t damage its legs in the truck, and really just drive smoothly, don’t go throwing the thing into bends ect. if the horse hasn’t travelled much you might find it trys to kick seven bells of ■■■■ out of the box, and that can be very interesting to say the least
but good luck anyway

failing straps just shrink wrap it

tachograph:

Personally I’d rope it to the front and save on diesel costs :grimacing:

Can’t you get it in a cage??

Thanks all - the Misses or the woman whom owns the horse box is coming with me, so thanks for the advice on that.

And i have checked about the recovery and yes she is with a specialist insurer, anyone over 25 with the correct licence and recovery for the horse and box is included if we break down etc.

I am sort of looking forward to it, as long as i dont have to mess with it, but must admit i think i prefer the shrink wrap option especailly for the end that kicks !

With a lot of them the most interesting part is getting the thing to go up the ramp. There is no inbetween, they either go straight in or refuse for half an hour (then suddenly decided to plod right in.)

If your not driving smoothly enough the horse will tell you pretty quickly!

Seems like you got it all sorted  - shrink wrapped horses … I like that one

Get a couple of 5 ton straps that should keep it secure, then you’re keeping vosa happy! Just watch out for the rspca
