Drivers using mobiles on the move

Last night on the M1/M25, we overtook two trucks and both drivers were texting on their phones, one steering with his elbows while he held the phone in both hands. Both trucks were spotted because they were weaving all over the place and not staying in their lane. Totally unaware of their surroundings and not notice a marked patrol vehicle overtaking them. If we had been a VOSA patrol, these drivers would be on a month long holiday and minus at least £100. Why do it? This is what I can’t understand?
With cameras everywhere and so many people dying to place videos on youtube, especially the ‘dangerous truck’ brigade, just waiting to slag of truck drivers, is that text message, or Facebook update, that important?? And if the worse happens, because you were using a mobile, is it worth a few years in prison? This isn’t an attack on just truck drivers because car drivers are just as bad but they don’t drive 44tonnes and don’t normally have a massive company logo all over there vehicle!!

VOSA cannot stop a driver using a mobile - that’s a police matter - same for speeding

VOSA can report a driver for using a mobile to the Traffic Commissioner and the TC can remove the LGV entitlement for a period of time, usually one month. The TC can also call the O Licence holder to attend and warn him of his duty to run a professional operation.

Can that be done without a conviction for using the mobile?

Not sure Rog tbh. I think so but I will ask my contacts at VOSA and clarify.

no they need a conviction first.
All police forces in the uk now report mobile phone convictions direct too the traffic commissioners office so there is no escaping now, my uncle who is 68 got caught on the phone last year within 3 months he was visiting the scottish tc whom gave him a a months holiday for the phone, he also had 2 speeding offences 1 was 5 years ago the other 9 years ago, also 1 count of failing too keep records 11 years ago for which he got another 3 weeks.

People SHOULD keep their beak out of other peoples business! as a one arrow normally hurts! :sunglasses: everyone’s truck mad, " oh, let’s report him to his boss! :open_mouth: " get a life! :grimacing: :grimacing: :grimacing: :grimacing: :grimacing:

Its a bit hit or a miss,
I got done for a phone offence (yes not my cleverest move) no visit to the commissioner
but one of other drivers got done for same thing and he did have to visit the commissioner
!!!

Counted 11 on phone (HGV Drivers) and only 6 car drivers

Sure supports the public’s theory that we are intelligent

Multi tasking…

Everyone’s at it. It’s Facebook. Helps keep the boredom at bay on long journeys. I’ve become pretty nifty at one handed writing and surfing with my thumb.

There is no need to get caught using a mobile phone. There are plenty of good hands free kits on the market.

Depending on the circumstances I don’t have a problem with people using mobiles for voice calls while driving, but anyone who believes they can drive safely while texting needs a reality check :unamused:

I thought that’s what the raddled curtains pulled half way across the window was for.

In the roadworks on the M25 today and had 4 cars drifting towards me at different times, all using phones! I find a good burst of air horn usually makes them focus their attention! The problem is the drift to your lane and hit you but I wonder who gets the blame?

This is the reason why here are so many accidents happening on the roads now, drivers too busy looking down at their phones.

My work phone wont pair up to the in cab hands free. Result is work phone is switched off when leaving sites. If they want me they have to call my own phone which is connected to a hands free unit.

Its getting ridiculous, I counted more cars than not using phones the other day. Most hand held in the lap so not voice calls. Either texts or apps. Really don’t see what is so important.

I like missed calls from the office…
Oops my bluetooth didnt connect so pulled over in a layby to find out what you wanted (returned call) then its a sandwich break and a facebook update as well as a few texts and maybe a swig of redbull, see no need to ■■■■ around endangering the world and yourself, hit (not literally mind ) a layby and chill :sunglasses:
