What would you do if you lived in the 18th century?
Only one cold bath a week!
You can do a lot with baby wipes, but if there is a truckstop nearby and you choose to use laybys ,then you cant complain afterwards that there are no facilities for drivers
I tramp all week and, even though we get parking paid and have snap and Welcome Break accounts, I very rarely park in a truckstop/MSA. Mostly down to noise and inconsiderate parking of other, but also the price for what you get in return isn’t worth it. As for the facilities, well I’ve no beef in paying for a shower at some if I’m not overnighting to help keep them open, but the state of some mean I’d sooner use baby wipes or a stand up wash in my cab instead. Food wise, most are over priced microwaved carp so I mostly self cater in the cab. Only regular one I use if in the area is Whitley bridge and have the Gammon if she’s got any left.
After quite a few years of doing this I know plenty of quiet areas to park close to our loading and tipping points, some are lay bys but never without a verge/barrier between me and the road. We’re very lucky in that all our jobs allow full use of there facilities if needed, including some good showers. A lot of these quiet areas aren’t far from truckstops and MSA’s that I could use but choose not to.
There will never be enough quality facilities for drivers regardless of how much money is thrown at it, people will alway complain and abuse them. Twice I’ve seen posts recently that someone has taken the showerhead at Bransons Cross!! Regularly you’ll see posts of the state previous animals have left showers and toilets. Until this stops, which it never will, there will always be a shortage of facilites. Parking in lay bys etc won’t change this for the better

That is a major problem ,the abuse drivers show towards some of the facilities, I often use Branson’s cross which has very good facilities in my opinion and ran by a small team, the other week I got up early to walk down to have a shower ( which are spotless by the Way ) only to see a driver having a ■■■■■ next to his truck for gods sake man the toilets are open all night clean and no more than 100 yards at the very most away from the furthest parking .if I ever park at Lyme I never shower at night when there busy , generally filthy hear drivers spitting in them etc etc , I tend to get up extra early and shower then after they have been cleaned and are much quieter ,
I like others if I have to will park in places that I know are quiet if poss but I am a curtainsider so I consider myself a high risk target.generally do industrial estates rather than lay byes though do fill safer in truck stops / services etc but inconsiderate drivers running engines and chatting outside your cab etc etc do my head in , even had a driver playing really load music one night in Barton truck stop , and I mean loud . ( wouldn’t recommend Barton by the way )
I used to get a good wash at my last drop before parking up somewhere “with the lads”.
When I got a motor with a night heater I found I could rest my water container right up
against the heat outlet and this was sufficient to get the water too hot to wash in
