driver's mate

No problem at all with folks going off on a tangent - But when you quote another participant’s post in your comment, it’s generally understood that what you are saying relates directly to that post. If not, why quote it in the first place?

W T F.

had 3 trips to same school on Thursday.
2200 kilos of rads each trip (max load with my lunch box!!)
The plumpers and labourers whinged as I hand balled all 3 loads off. Would have taken 4 teips if I took me pump truck. My only complaint.
Took longer to load with pump truck and forks then it took me hand ball off.
Treated myself to bottle lucozade and ■■■ afterwards.

But did anyone take coals to Newcastle

I took steel from London to Sheffield

In the eighties Tilcon in Derbyshire took coal from Betteshanger Colliery in Kent to Newcastle as a return load, then red stone from Harden quarry to Weaste…

Folk on here go on about handballing in the ‘old days’ but my father was on both Thermalite and bagged grain in the 1960’s and only carried stuff as far as the tailboard. If the customer (farmer, brickie) wanted it elsewhere then THEY carried it, no ■■■■■■■ bags up into lofts for my old chap!

Pete.

That’s the way to do it.

In the 80’s, summertime, two of us would go load 22ton of spuds by hand in Penzance area then I would do 1 - 5 northern markets that night or one drop Glasgow, wintertime 900 crates of caulli’s & cabbage.
If I was still doing it now, I wouldn’t have turned into the fat ■■■■■■■ I am.

Just handballed 40 pallets of empty fruit boxes into my Thunderbird 3 for recycling, tipped, then 7 cages of flattened, 2nd day running, on me Bill - anyone impressed?

drivers are fat/lazy enough as it is.

I was 11stone 6 in March when I came back to flour deliveries. I’m 11st now. Summeister I’dve started at 4am, would’ve started deliveries about 6am.

I was 11 stone 6 when I was 13 lol :stuck_out_tongue:

I love a bit of hands on action at work, heavy cages and pallets with a bit of hand ball thrown in is my kinda job… especially at night where no one can see the sweaty mess I end up in. As for a mate, No thanks!!! See far too many guys driving around with what looks like, a lazy, high school drop out, whos mummy wakes them up and gets them dressed and sends them off out to work with a packed lunch, sleeping with their feet up on the dash… Not for me.

And who would fund this 2nd man? Hope not from my wages :frowning:

3.5t handball on me tod today, delivering between Dudley and Bolton,9 drops in total. Night out with everything off today, a lie in and a run back to the yard tomorrow.
Are the showers any good at Stafford Services or are ASDA wet wipes a better alternative?

what with the driver shortage and all, would someone please say to their agency, " sure i’ll do that multi-drop supermarket job, but I will need a drivers mate to do the handballing" and report back to inform us of the response.

well if the items over 25kg then its illigal for anyone person to lift it so please send us some more jobs for the boys and lets see the price of food rise again!

Cotswoldcrunch:
I’ve got a drivers’ mate on Monday, going to Devon. We get a mate for handball weight above 5t. This is total for the day, not one drop. We do have mates for less if a certain job requires it. One such being Reids Bakery in Swansea where the sacks are thrown from the lorry up through a loft hatch where the mate stacks them. We also get them if a delivery can’t be done within loading time restrictions (no way will I attempt to carry 2t in 20 minutes). .

Well you would be wood-ant it be deardery

Here I go, banging on about the old days. When I was a kid, I’d go with my old man to Marston Valley Brickworks and help put 6,000 bricks on a knackered old Hippo and then help chuck 'em off at the other end.

is that the place J13 truckstop now is?

No idea, I haven’t lived in Engerland since 1974.

It’s illegal for one person to lift over 25kg?
That’s this year’s strong man competition ■■■■■■.
You do spout some cobblers.

Hang on,just had a look and J13 would be about right for the brickworks, now long gone.

Sorry about this ■■■■ up

Used to do 500 to 600 rolls of underlay weighing between 25-50kg each round carpet shops all over UK,usually averaged 12drops all done in a day,in theory you were only meant to drop/drag rolls to edge of trailer but some of the “yoofs” that were allegedly warehouse men had legs that went like bambi’s with a 25kg roll,I always ended up dragging 15-20 rolls to the edge and carrying most of them myself.

+1 mate. If someone like B&D was assigned to me and wouldn’t carry more than 25kg at a time, he’d be left in the yard. Our sacks are 16kg (used to be 32 in days gone) and I’ll carry 3 or 4 depending on the delivery. My record is 6

coal is still delivered in 50kg sacks, all handball. Also if you did any manual handling induction with a job there is no legal max weight. Just needs to be risk assessed and varies on what the person can comfortable carry and provisions to me made to aid moving it. second person, trollys, break it down etc.
