I recall many years ago running tanker loads of stuff down to the south west to deal with a crude oil spillage from a ship.We were advised officially that normal drivers hours rules did not apply due to the urgency. Some of us declined but others carried on regardless. As said above some there are not enough hours in the day for some.
FACT !!!
Under UK law it is illegal to suspend an employee without pay.
The rules are all wrong to begin with, 15 hours is far too long to be working in any job,
how can rules that allow you to work 15 hours then 9 off then another 15 hours working be safe!
If you worked 12 hours (which is still too much) and then parked up and phoned your tm and told him your tired and done for the day, there’d be nothing he could say to get you back in the saddle
iirc, drivers hours were suspended during the coal strike a few years ago

Theres some leaway to be had but i dont think you can take the ■■■■ too much
Ok, fair enough it’s primarily for drivers to get to a proper park after getting stuck or something.
So in other words to cut down numerous paragraphs to 4 words they are basically saying ‘‘Use Your Common Sense’’
So why make such a song and dance about it?
Does anybody with a brain need to be told this like schoolkids?
I don’t know about you lot but if I was stuck in the wilds somewhere with no kit or a knackered night heater, and I got a chance to move even though my time was up, I’d be saying ■■■■ this for a game of soldiers, rules or no rules I’m off!..then do a printout to cover my arse.
As I said…‘‘Use your common sense’’
Although I can maybe understand it when you see some of the questions and comments on here from time to time, some of you really think that just because you have a Class 1 licence, VOSA actually own you.

That’s the other side of the coin on all this stuff.
As I said before, if all this had been about a dispensation to cover lost deliveries and empty supermarket shelves, there is zero chance that I’d be doing extra hours to cover it.
As somebody has just said, the hours are too excessive as it is without doing any bloody more.

But only the driver side affected ie the Bulkers carrying coal had dispensation and had to carry an official letter to deviate from the regs.
Or so I was told at the time

2You can be suspended without pay if your employment contract says your employer can do this, but they must be acting reasonably.
If your employment contract doesn’t say your employer can do this, your employer may still be able to suspend you, but with pay. To show that it’s not a punishment the suspension will normally be on full pay."
It`s a definite: Maybe
Depends, on your contract.
Default position is that suspension should be with pay, but this can be overridden by the terms of your employment contract. IOW it is permitted under UK employment law. Hence my disagreement with Pat’s assertion that it is illegal.

With the proviso that the employer must be acting reasonably. I have yet to see a contract of employment with such a clause in it and have been working for 42 years. Edit to add…and I’ve had waaaayyy too many jobs!

Which makes no difference at all to the (in)correctness of the assertions that suspension without pay is illegal under UK employment law. Put simply “No, it is not illegal.”

Agreed in what appears to be, in my experience, a very small minority of employers and those should be avoided IMHO. It was put in place to discourage bad employers starving people out of a job or into accepting poor t’s and c’s. With that in mind I prefer to promote the thinking that it is illegal as in reality it will always almost prove to be so and can see no benefit to the average working man bymuddying the water.
Its the same as when the Yorkshire water shortage was on a good few years ago and all the driving regs went out of the window for those involved, everyone i know seemed to be writing on the back of the card that they were pulling a water tanker on a Friday
