Can anyone shed any light on driving at the weekend for HM armed forces & drivers hours? IE u work full time through the week & then u spend sat & sunday working for the government.Does anybody know or is anyone currently sarving in the TA or other reserve forces■■?
EU rules on driver’s hours do not apply to
Vehicles owned or hired without a driver by the Armed Forces, civil defence services, fire services and forces responsible for maintaining public order, when the carriage is undertaken as a consequence of the tasks assigned to these services and is under their control.
I think that covers your situation.
As you don’t fall under EU regs you also do not come under the WTD for mobile workers either so looks like you’re good to go.

Agreed, on the basic circumstances you’ve outlined you are exempt from drivers hours regulations and the WTD.

Exempt No rules as in hrs or wtd regs. just dont finish and go to work without a rest of some sorts ie
Drive some 400miles from weekend camp finish at ta centre at 4am and go directly to work as your asking for agro if something happens.
If your off on a weekend jolly and its gonna be a late finish have a day off on the monday, after all you get paid for the TA work
I was a reservist at RAF Brize Norton, spot on with Rikki`s view topic stick tab.About 2 years ago it was different to the updated law,as we were not allowed to resume to civillian duties early after training weekends had finished without taking a weekly rest period, new rule is the 11 off before starting civy driving on Monday.Or working week. This would have put a lot of drivers joining up to become TA,RN reserve,RM reserve and SAS reserve(Yes there is such a thing).By law, employers have to let volunteers go away from the job to train, and the civy job is secured when you return from being called up or posted overseas for 6 or 9 months, you cant get fired. The debate was that in effect you may have not slept for days,if on exercise, then jump in to a truck, early morning, not taking in to account of the commute to and from your milatary base, and then the commute to your civy job as a trucker.Even if the training weekend, did not include any driving,a rest period was the best advice prior to starting the normal job.
DT, i’ve been in the TA for years now and as usual with the forces they obey the rules to the letter of the law and usually go a wee bit further.(because none of the regular staff will want to lose their pension).
Before the exemption,as stated in the link above our regiments policy was to allow vocational drivers to go home a bit earlier in order to get at least 12 rest before the start of their next shift.
If you are asking because you are thinking of joining or have just joined then let your boss know that there are opportunities to expand your CV, E.G. ADR, fork lift op and a few other types of licence you normally wouldn’t get.
