After a couple of recent incidents, is it nearly time for those above a certain age to be retested annually?

Dazed and confused! It’s weird because it’s quite difficult to get onto the wrong carriageway on the Motorway! I would like to see some sort of retest every 5 years or so for all car drivers!
The wife works for the NHS and deals with mental health…she say’s the number of elderley that suffer with dementia but still drive their cars on a daily basis is frightening

It’s not just the elderly.

Correct me if i’m wrong but don’t 100% of lorry drivers hold a car drivers licence?? I like the idea of a refresher every 5years for EVERYONE, then if you dont meet the standard you must take a test.

Yep! As the Dcpc is supposed to level the training playing field across the board for wagon drivers! Let’s go the whole hog and retest all drivers every 5 years and clear the road network of numbties! I’m quite happy to do this!
I think at the very least there should be a proper eye test and medical before you get your licence and when it needs to be renewed.
I’ve seen drivers nearly come to a halt on major roads to read the signs, this cannot be safe.

No, because it is as you say, a couple of incidents, the law of averages will dictate that no matter how much you try, excrement will happen
Statistically the older drivers are safer than youngsters, they may be a total PITA, but the numbers tell a different story when it comes to accidents. They are less likely to drink and drive, less likely to drive without tax/insurance/MOT/bald tyres/bad brakes/etc.
Although there should be more of a tie up between DVLA and the NHS, anyone with dementia or any other debillitating illness should lose their ticket, as should those who need glasses as thick as ashtrays and anyone who wears a hat should be banned from the roads forever
Old people are dangerous

FTFY
People are not perfect, they’re never going to be, I’ve know a 25yr old kick boxing champion who had a stroke, a 30 (and a bit) year old who had a heart attack, kids at school who were blind or deaf etc.
I would rather see police back on the road policing bad driving, rather than (s)cameras just issuing tickets for technicalities. Speeding is against the law, I’m not arguing that, but it’s nowhere near as bad as a driver who joins the motorway the wrong way, who’s driving at 5am this morning in the hammering down rain without his lights on etc…
i dont think a test every 5 years will solve anything where i work they take on new drivers who have just passed test and 50% dont pass assesment
Agree with Wayne police on roads better than cameras , I’ve lost count the amount of times I’ve seen old drivers do silly things
