Driverless taking a step closer

UK govement to spend millions investing in driverless trucks and buses.
have to laugh though as article says grant shapps hopes this will create 1000s of of jobs and help grow the economy.

I’m no expert but yes it will create jobs building the thing’s.
But what about the thousands of drivers it will loose once self driving trucks and buses arrive.
Not to mention the effect it will have on local cafes etc as be no drivers on the estaes going there.

Only time will tell I guess.

Whenever I read about this kind of rubbish I think, how many of my journeys could of been done by a self driving truck. That on top of just 14million investment. It isn’t happening any time soon

All the drivers who will not have a job  will they get a job at a filling station?. I do not think the diesel fairies fill tanks, only empty them

That is Schapps talking and as we know that thing is a complete disaster, it really ought to be struck dumb. Every time it opens its mouth a load of drivel comes out.

I suppose the idea is that we find something better to do with our time.I think your post highlights the failure of capitalism. We could all work 2 days a week to keep the country going if only we could find a system that works better than capitalim, socialism and communism because I dont think any of these work well.

‘‘Business Secretary Grant Shapps said self-driving vehicles “could add tens of billions to our economy and create tens of thousands of jobs” within a few years.’’

Yeah sounds like someone not having an idea what the f they’re talking about. Try going to the bank/investors and ask for a few million £ to start a new business. 1st thing they ask you is how you gonna pay back, how much is that business going to make p.a./over 10 years etc. It’s gonna be a great business billions and billions of turnover/profit and stuff. See if they give you 1 penny. But somehow when it’s public money it’s ok to just give it away and hope for some miracle growth. Btw what happened to that big great innovative revolutionary battery factory?

^^^ these people are placed to cause as much destruction to the western economies as possible in the lead up to the great reset, they are performing well and great rewards will be theirs.

They ran out of money/ funding and an australian.firm.has.bought it cheap.
And no doubt there make it work and make a profit.
So if they can do it why can’t we do it?

So if they can do it why can’t we do it?

  1. They’re buying it from Administrators so they’ll get it cheap
  2. They’re already doing it in Oz so they’ll get economies of scale and they should know what they’re doing.

The battery factory did not meet the qualification for public money and, therefore, it failed.

It’s years away, anyone who has used the cruise control an a new Merc could tell you that, all these things now being added mirror cams adaptive cruise control lane assist are all the precursors of the technology,

And as you are all aware its unreliable and unprdictable, the cruise control often brakes the truck for no reason it also doesn’t know when changes have been made to road layout, yesterday on the M4 near Cardiff it decided we were in a 30 zone and tried to slow the truck down quickly enough to cause a potential accident if I had not been there to intervene I shouldn’t worry yourselves to much the technology for trucks is a long way off being perfect.

There has also been many reported incidents of autonomous vehicles being in solved in accidents what would happen if a 44t vehicle decided that roundabout that required a 15mph approach is now a strait stretch of motorway and 56mph will be just grand, its not going to happen for years if ever.

If and when it happens all the out of work drivers will be able to get jobs in the body shops

HS2 is costing 200 billion and is meant to be done in a decade. It has already taken a decade to get to this point. That’s 20+ years for something we don’t even need.

Driverless trucks are at least a generation away if not more.

I’d lump this in with “things that sound good when you’re trying to big yourself up with the rest of the government, but you know it isn’t going to happen”.

You could also take it as a measure of the high esteem the haulage industry is held in, where they think an experienced driver is as replaceable by a robot as were the guys who used to build cars on the production line.

IVECO begins on-road testing of autonomous truck technology. :open_mouth: Just look how happy the driver is in the YT video. commercialfleet.org/news/tr … technology

I used to think driverless was far far off technology wise. Then Volvo leant me a Dual Clutch 540 demo to take to Italy to review for Commercial Motor. Being from HQ it had every last extra. Adaptive cruise included and retarder. Get it going, set cruise, set distance from vehicle in front, set hill descent speed and just steer. I left it to its own devices 90% of the time. It went over the Alps without me needing to touch pedals unless stopping at a peage. And………that was in 2018. They’ve jumped ever further ahead, Volvos now can deal with slow stop start traffic without touching pedals. And as for electric versions, their hill descent is even better and regenerative, on a hilly route they put enormous amounts of power back into batteries. Only thing left to crack is steering and that’s not far off. I’m conflicted as I love technology, but I’ve also loved being a driver. But fact is it’s coming and none of us will be able to stop it.

I’m hearing a lot of slowing down to allow other traffic in? And driving most economically? ■■■■ that it’s foot down Friday [emoji23]
Driving in the centre of your lane? Great for avoiding pot holes and giving space to hazards in other lanes. [emoji849]

Also doesn’t seem that much advanced from my Actros active cruise control now.

And it slows down to let emerging traffic join from a slip road, will be interesting when merging traffic starts dithering.
