Driver Shortage?

All I ever wanted - was the same square deal everyone else gets, and left to my own devices to get on with whatever job I’m doing.

I do sort of admire the bullet proof confidence chaps like you and Carryfast have. Nothing is ever your fault, always someone else to blame.

Crikey! Well noted Luke!
Could they take over the Prime Ministership? Eminently well qualified.

OK, so if it is 100% my fault, what is supposed to happen next?

“Take care when destroying your enemy, that you don’t leave them short of total ruin, lest they one day return to achieve to completion of you - what you left unfinished with them.”

N. Machiavelli

If something is my fault, then punish me on the spot, punish me once, and then be done with it.
To carry on punishing me and my entire family, long-term - is not only spiteful, but invites disaster at some point in the future, should the boot ever be on the other foot.

Didn’t say that though did I. Your all or nothing and nothing in between is very naïve and something we normally grow out of as teens. Maybe if you started seeing the world and the people in a different way, I.e almost never 100% one way or another and generally shades of grey, you might get on better.

That chip on your shoulder is the size of a house at this stage

Not seeing much increase in the rates for the majority of hauliers round here from a quick look at Indeed. Expect Dist still paying [zb] and wanting 100 hrs per week. Great Bear £11.04/hr class 1. Campeys of Selby £12. Asda £15.30 nights & lots of weekends. Wincanton £12.09. Gregprys £30k nights doing store dels. XPO £11.23. Newcold £12.01. Viamaster £10/hr “drivers urgently needed” PMSL!. Morons £12.25. Longs £31k for 70 hrs and must work every saturday. Downtons £11.60.

Morons have just put their money up to £16/hr weekday days, full time not agency. £18/hr Sats. £20/hr Suns. Ad on Indeed Leeds. Clearly got no-one to take Arla milk cages into the supermarkets.

I did nights for Arla on the milk cages, it’s ok if the driver who delivered the night before picked up his or her fair share of the empty cages left at the supermarket yards .
If not , I was left to get them and a lot of them.
If the manager was in a good mood and let you use the scissor lift it would save a lot of time or it’s multiple tail lift use to bang them in .
The manager would count every plastic container of milk and then there’s the different varieties of the stuff .
Willmotts in Shepton Mallet are offering earning potential of around £50,000 on their website, with trucks parked up growing weeds.
And Wrings in Bristol are desperate.

That’s right. It’s crap work and most experienced drivers avoid it like the plague as there’s far easier work out there for the same money. Same can be said for most of the ‘food service’ work.

If you get a moody manager then it’s hell, or the driver of the shift before has upset him , he takes it out on you .
I had one mad Irish manager who saw me pull in and in anger pulls down the shutter door and totally ignored me .
A quick call to HQ in Leeds got him off my case .

If one of those cages starts rolling away out of control, I ain’t stopping it for nobody, too heavy and silly little wheels that go their own way .

With a bit of luck, a large number of firms will go under, and then it’ll be too late to offer “more money to go in there”… They’ve had their chances to let Market Forces do their thing, and have politically dodged simple base capitalism at every turn, prefering to lie and cheat the workforce instead.

Ultimately, it will be Driver’s reluctance to chuck poorly paid full time to go agency - that’ll bring it all crashing down.

The current “shortage” as everyone has been saying on this thread - is anything but “too few drivers with too many full time vacancies.”

Temporary high wages - isn’t worth the crashing down risk like I experienced a year ago.
I’m a total convert against Agencies now, seeing them for the crooks so many on here actually warned of, back when I was waxing lyrical just two years back…

It is T&Cs that must improve - or only mug drivers will be left to fill the vacancies, and get ever more shafted as time goes by.

I don’t mind working 12-15 hour shifts, but since it is only legal to do 3 of them per week - I’m not interested in working 4,5, and 6 shifts - unless it is a full time contract on fixed 4x12hr shifts per week, days, lates or nights - I don’t care, as long as it doesn’t rotate, since it is shifting about the shifts that buggers up one’s biological clock… There will always be enough drivers out there to create a workforce that has fixed shifts… None of these excuses that "Ohhh we’ve got to rotate you, or we’d never get cover for the Friday-Monday Graveyard Shift - would we? Yes you would, if you paid the premiums for that, and someone grabbed it for the higher basic, and pension contributions that such a shift would command.

Some firms are going to get wise, and accept that whilst they won’t raise wages enough, they could improve T&Cs enough to poach drivers from firms that might even pay higher - but treat their drivers like dirt.
“Being able to pick your own shift patterns outright” - would go a long way to achieving that.
You were supposed to be able to do that on agency, but as everyone knows - agencies bully you into doing patterns you DON’T want - “which if you don’t accept - the phone stops ringing”…
F–k 'em all. I’m done with it. I’ve deliberately priced myself out of the market now, and let’s see how this plays out. Full time jobs with a £40k+ basic forthcoming? - or - a proliferation of PART time jobs that have family-friendly hours, pay enough to meet the bills, and don’t pay so much as to trigger tax inplications, or DWP ones come to that, especially if one’s spouse has perma lost their job in the meantime…

Don’t know if it’s been mentioned but our garden bin waste collection is going on hold for 10 weeks as our local council are short of drivers would you believe and they are concentrating on recycling and normal bin collections, I bet we don’t get a discount!!

Even the Bin collectors - are having a spot of “Mental Illness Bother” around my neighborhood, it seems…
