Driver rules uk

so i am a new class 1 driver working for a company moving steel and concrete.
i am using an older unit then most of the other drivers ( guessing letting me get use to it before giving me a newer unit haha)

all the new units have storage boxes on the sides for chains and ratchets( red chain binder things)
obviously the unit i am in hasn’t so i put the chains in the footwell of the passenger side in storage boxes, long story short was told by another driver not to do this as i would get [Zb] buy visa if stopped.

so my question is having only recently passed my test and not been told anything about these rules that i can get [Zb] for is there a website or book i can buy that will enlighten me on these rules?
thank you for your replies( if any)

I’d be more concerned about getting ■■■■ ed by the chains if I was unfortunate enough to turn the motor over than "visa " to be honest.

Yeah I have realized that now looking back on it but what about the other rules and where to find out about them?

Ask away here mate. Sure there’ll be some ■■■■ taking, some people taking offence, some people talking absolute ■■■■■■■■, but eventually you’ll get the answers to which you seek grasshopper.

Don`t know what sort of motor your driving, but years ago i and a few of the other drivers used to get one of them plastic bread trays and put it secured up against the catwalk across the chassis or on the catwalk with a piece of board in the bottom to stop the links getting jammed in the holes.
Saved having them in the footwell, cab is for people not equipment

I’ve never heard of this being a thing, the other drivers winding you up to be honest. In my old job I used to carry 10+ ratchet straps in my passenger foot well and when I was stopped by vosa nothing was ever mentioned.

The only issue might be (if you have a flat, or nearly flat floor) that they could end up interfering with the pedals if they slid around under cornering/braking.

That’s the thing I wouldn’t no if they was messing me about or not haha.

And asking away with questions is ok if I knew what to ask in the first place haha

we had this when we started to do explore work and I refused to carry chains on floor in cab ( only had the one side locker )
our trucks were then taken away , drivers side diesel tank was took off and replaced with a storage bin for straps , a metal box was fitted to drivers side catwalk for chains and a new a- frame was fitted with holders for binders , when my truck was changed they put on a- frame / metal box but left diesel tank on as it was a pain with just one diesel tank tramping

tool box

a - frame for binders + toolbox for chains

if you look under the back of the cab , below Suzis you’ll see they also had a storage tray made for excess ratchets , Anderson leads , straps etc

Could perhaps be an issue there? Back in the 70’s I took a Leyland Boxer tipper to Derby test station for its annual test and the driver had a shovel on the passenger side of the cab floor. Tester failed it; ‘Insecure object in cab which could interfere with controls’ and they wanted me to book a retest! :unamused: I chucked the shovel in the body and the station manager overruled the tester and passed it!

I carried tools, and sometimes 5 gallon of diesel, in the nearside footwell on my Fodens but of course there was an engine cowling in the cab and nothing could move across.

Pete.

I once had a 18 l coolbox , which I kept on the passenger seat of a ERF EC11 - I even had the seatbelt round it to keep it “secure”. One evening while loading bales of straw in a field and receiving “assistance” from the driver of the loading shovel to push me back out the gate onto the road the whole lot ended up on the drivers side . Last thing I remember was watching a fully loaded coolbox coming straight at me - knocked me out cold for about 10 minutes. I wouldn’t like to repeat the experience with chains and tensioners - I’d say they would sting just a little .

Personally I hate anything in the footwell of the cab, especially things like straps and chains, that’s my personal thing about a cab being clean and clutter free, but never heard of DVSA fining a driver for it unless the windscreen was full of clutter.

However this booklet should cover just about every rule DVSA can get you for and the fines they can impose, only 300+ pages.

Thank you wanted to read it now then realized you said 300 pages hahaha

That’s gotta be the first thing that has ever impressed me when it comes to Stobarts (or your posts come to think of it)

However next time put it all into one post eh!
