Driver regulations for van drivers

Does anyone know anything about drivers regulations for van drivers? Ive been working as a multi drop van driver for over 18 months and weve never had any restrictions on the number of hours were allowed to work, however they have recentally picked up on some drivers working too many hours a week. They are now saying we cannot drive more than 48 hours a week which dosent bother me too much as i rarely do over that anyway.
The thing thats ■■■■■■■ me off is that they are now saying we have to have 12 hrs rest between shifts, we have reaserched this and cannot find anything that states this, just seems a number they have picked out of mid air! I currently work Fri 14.30 - 22.30 and Sat 8-18 giving me 9.5hrs rest, but am getting called in tomorrow to find out whats chaging :frowning: Its crazy according to them i need less hours rest driving my van than i do a 40 tonner, however our vans are 3.5 ton not tachographed or subject to driver regs.

Goods Van not exceeding 3.5 tonnes GVW will be on UK domestic regs

In any 24 hours the maximum is 11 hours work which can include 10 hours driving

Bresks do not count as either work or driving

There are no legal breaks or rest periods set down in those regs

Example - start 0600 and finish at 1700 = 11 hours with 10 of them driving and no breaks taken - that can be done every day for weeks months or years
or (just to be silly but legal)
START - drive/ work 1 hour - off 2 hours - drive/ work 1 hour - off 2 hours
drive/ work 1 hour - off 1 hour - drive/ work 1 hour - off 1 hour - drive/ work 1 hour - off 1 hour - drive/ work 1 hour - off 1 hour - drive/ work 1 hour - off 1 hour - drive/ work 1 hour - off 1 hour - drive/ work 1 hour - off 1 hour - drive/ work 1 hour - off 1 hour - drive/ work 1 hour - off 1 hour - Back to START

To add - those on domestic regs are under the normal (not RTD) WTD and that can be completely opted out of by an individual

The WTD only recommends certain breaks and rest periods with none being statutory

Your bos can dictate company policy ,so long as it does not flout the law of the land.If they want you to have 12 hours off between duties then thats up to them.

working long long hours at a poor paying job
will not make you rich

if its to make ends meet fair enough
excessive hours ruin your life dont do them

maybe the other 15 hours should be to enjoy the money you earned in the first nine

Is this by chance the viewpoint of someone earning £22.00pr hr, like all drivers do?

No this is the viewpoint of an agency driver who won’t work for less than £10 per hour even if it means sitting at home currently on £13.17 and home every night

I thought van drivers we’re still in scope of EU regs but with no need to make a manual record of hours worked?

we’re all in the same boat here, we all know[/b] the rates…
£6.50 cough… maybe £7 or £8 at a stretch… cough cough
(unless of course you’re nightshift, or something specialised, or an adr/hiab ticket holder, in which case I will take it back)

I am with 3 agencies they will not ring me if a job pays less than £10 per hour.Last week i had 4 days with no work then did 11 hours on Friday at £13.17,9 on Saturday at £17 and 11 on Sunday at £21. I then had 2 days of and have worked 3 days this week 34 hours at £13.17 per hour. I find if i leave the low paid work to drivers such as you i can earn enough to stay at home.

I never work nights and don’t do anything specialised,i know that if a company needs a driver they will pay if the job needs doing. It’s only because drivers such as yourself will work for £6.50 that firms pay it i would rarther work 30 hours than 60 for the same money.
