Driver nicks diesel

Zac_A:
Fact is it wasn’t noticed over a period of several years.

My guess would be that it wasn’t noticed but then someone from management spotted him syphoning out the fuel one day while driving past and then Turners went through the records with a fine toothcomb, checked fuel and tacho records and put two and two together.

Turners estimated that Randall stole diesel on 138 occasions between October 2018 and May 2022, costing the company between £3,384 and £7,464.

The maths here (£3,384/138 and £7,464/138) suggests that he was stealing between £24.52 and £54.06 worth of diesel each time. I’m guessing he was using 25 litre drums, hiding them in the lay-by somewhere and then picking them up in his car later? It seems a bit too much to waltz out of the company gate with.

I was looking at those figures and came to a similar answer. I wasn’t sure about how much cherry that would be as it’s cheaper than DERV, but 25l drums sounds about right.
The report does say he was doing it in a layby near Penrith. I’d imagine that’d be close enough to home for picking up later.
It’s a very wide range though, more than double from low to high estimates.

You’d think they’d notice fairly quickly, that one of there fridge units was suddenly using a hell of a lot of diesel, on the odd day or two.
It’s one thing nicking 5l of derv everytime you fill up. Different drivers can get better or worse mpg. That guys a bit heavy footed compared to most of our lads.
But fridge units tend to use virtually the same amount of fuel on a daily basis. They’re either running, or off, and not open to the various drivers abilities to influence. Maybe they were just giving him plenty of rope to hang himself with?

If I was running an empty trailer on return to depot I will turn off my fridge as a) I don’t want the noise and b) courtesy to the company I am working for as there is no need for it to be on while empty. Other drivers might not be like this hence why it might have been difficult to track. You also have some stupid sites which ask you to turn off while being unloaded so usage on a fridge will never be similar. You also have those who are too lazy to fill up. The other day I put nearly 200 litres in because it was running on fumes. Next day different trailer 20 litres. I guess he was caught doing the deed rather than investigation. Then they looked into more.

nicking 25+L at a time is going to stand out when compared to same-run-different-driver.

What’s not true? That nicking 25L at a time is stupid? Or that it wouldn’t be noticed due to driving style differences?

You just said what I said that it wouldn’t be noticed after you said it WOULD stand out :unamused: so which one is it?

It’s all theoretical anyways, Turners man got caught, my former colleage did not.

But what I was intending to convey was that the Turner’s guy taking 25 L or more at a time would be likely to stand out, especially if it was not a daily occurence, becasuse there would be fluctuations in usage with no regular pattern.

Whereas my former colleague regularly taking 10L every day would be unlikely to be noticed because there would be a constant difference between his fuel economy and that of another driver, such as me, as I was sharing the same vehicle with him. If would just appear that he was more heavy footed than me.

Bragging, basically. “Look at me I’m so smart, smarter than the other drivers and I got one over on the company.” TBH he wasn’t someone I’d associate with out of work, always wanted a favour - like swapping shifts - but would never return a favour when asked. And would try to blame other people for vehicle damage, bit of a ■■■■■■ all round really

I just wish they had done some digging and found out how his home was actually heated! I guarantee a pound to a pinch of [zb] it was either gas or electric.

My thoughts exactly

I mean some company’s deserve it the way they treat the drivers however wouldn’t advise anyone to pinch fuel or anything

I have maxed my hours out many times, by going to sleep then clocking out- a lot of drivers do this when we get taken for mugs

Theft from your empolyer is wrong - even if they are a shower . I keep coming back to this time and time again - don’t work for these kinds of companies - when enough walk the company goes under and the work goes elsewhere . Far to many ■■■■■■■ with morgages , car loans and other debt so they can’t afford to lose as much as a weeks wages all to keep up with the neighbours / other drivers etc If you can’t afford to lose a couple of weeks pay then you are the problem not your employer .

(when I say "you " I don’t mean TDBen I mean drivers in general - just to be clear )

lucky you didnt associate with him then. If youd been useful to him hed have “had you” . Reminds me of a fellow who worked in a place nearby used to turn up round our yard some arvos i was at hed turn up with a yarn and was good company if you had nothing better to do . By chance one day a woman came round my house to pick up something wed sold got talking she came from same village as this fellow i said hes a good laugh ,she said dont give me that he got very friendly with her hubby then one day turned up at their home he knew she was alone, let him in while he waited for hubby ,he made advances and chased her round the house she hid up herself in somewhere ,petrified -scared to death -had never told anyone about it .

When I worked at Newark we had 10 ee,s ( agency & some might of been full time ) ,sacked for thieving diesel , they were at Easton working the following week
One local lad was caught thieving diesel , sacked & within a week / two was working at the council depot next door
I remember one job where the driver on opposite shift was meeting his mates at gonerby mor & filling there cars up on opp side of pumps then pocketing cash , when he left they asked me if I was doing it now , stupid really as boss was good , he’d let you fill your car up on diesel card , but lad just took the ■■■■ , he did try & get back but boss knew what had been going on and never had him back
I remember a few cases over years where t/o suspected something going on , leave yard pull up in lay-by 5 mins away every night , so send someone to watch , that’s how that lad who ended up at council got caught , was putting a drum in hedge on way out , then picking it up in car in morn on way home
Is it really worth loosing a job for a few ££££ of diesel , I’d not think so but some do obviously

Anyone who parks in any amount of time in a MSA knows that stealing is rife among drivers.

Maybe I am cynical but when I see drivers opening their backdoors up and a car/van parked up next to it being loaded up with a few bits I suspect employee theft.
Maybe I am a cynic though.
