One of our night drivers card expires next week and I know that at midnight he takes his old one out and puts the new one in, but something I read on businesslink.gov.uk is saying that you need to take two days of printouts from the VDU not the card before it expires, is this still the case or is this old hat info

it might be ok, there was a problem with cards issued before 26/8/2006 where they expired at one minute past midnight on the day of expiry and the new ones didn’t start working until the next midnight leaving almost 24 hours without a working card, If your driver has one of those cards he will find it explained in a letter with the new card and this was why 2 printouts were required
( hope I’ve explained that ok)

I’m not sure about the exact date of cards affected by that problem but I’m pretty sure that cards expiring in the last couple of months or so have been OK on that issue and printouts won’t be necessary
They’ve got so much better in the last year or so. They used to only send it to test stations but the card always gets sent to your home address now. The booklet that comes with the form doesn’t mention the change and the form still asks you to nominate a station. The only problem we’ve been having is that over time the chip can fall out of the card. I’ve sent them back noting that this is a fault but they get returned with a nice letter saying that as it’s damaged the replacement will have to be paid for. I think it’s unfair but not got much choice. One nil to the DVLA.
As far as I’m aware you’ve always had the card sent to your home address when it was renewed because it was about to expire.
I think you’re getting confused with the threads about changing address or replacing a faulty card
I agree with you completely about the service you can expect from the DVLA, actually over the past year a few of us have posted about the good service we’ve had from them.

I know this topic has come up several times before and a great deal of fuss is usually made about it.
“They won’t send it to your home address, you’ll have to collect it from the local testing station/DVLA office, etc. etc.”
My card expires on the 25th October.
I received a reminder & renewal form in early August.
You can either complete the form and return it, or, if there are no changes to details such as address, do it by phone. The fee is £19
I phoned on Friday 7th October. My new card arrived in the post to my home address this morning, 3 business days later.
Now what is so difficult and complicated about that?
I think I did mine on-line, cant actually remember, only renewed it in May for an August expiry, whichever way it was hassle free and sent to my penthouse.

My original one came to my home address 5 years ago.

The form I received in August made no mention of test station collection.
I was a bit late in applying for my renewal card…it took 11 days from posting to get it back in my postbox. I changed my address at the same time [i’d already done my Drivers Licence about 4 years ago but saw no reason to bother with doing the Card]
Because I was late, I had to do a print-out for 3 days.
Now…somewhere I read that if the card was faulty or lost, you could drive for up to 15 days on print-outs but
in the case of an expired card, you may not drive at all. Anyone else read that?

First cards and renewals have always come to your home address, while change of address ones used to have to be collected and exchanged. They didn’t want you having two in date cards because although the card with the old address would be cancelled it would still work.
I stand corrected on both points, that form looks new so I guess the ones I have at work are outdated. Same with the address/station thing, I’ve only done renewals recently, the one’s that went to the test stations were I think damaged ones.
