DRIVER CPC - Update on progress

Driver CPC.

I am sure this thread will wind up a few people and generally annoy many on here but I think it is a valid thread to keep people updated.

It seems the general consensus of opinion on this forum is “I’m not doing it” which is fair enough given the current situation and flaws that the DCPC system has. However, figures show that generally - DCPC is getting busier and starting to catch up towards the deadlines.

If you are remotely interested, here are some figures issued by the DfT.

The last quarter (July, August & September) saw a large drop in figures attending courses. There’s a good chance this was due to holidays and perhaps the Olympics but there was a distinct downturn.

Figures for October 2012 however have ‘rocketed’. In October alone, over 10,000 Driver Qualification Cards were issued (both periodic and initial) which is a rise of 42% compared to September. Out of these 10,000+ DQCs issued, 1,615 were for the initial qualification showing there is a steady influx of people into the trade (9,648 initial DQC issued since April 2012). This means in October 9,102 were issued for periodic training. This brings the annual figure to 46,485 DQC cards issued since April 2012

There have been 2 more approved training centres setup in October showing on-going commitment. (But how many have gone out of business as well?)

For October there have been 9,685 courses attended - a rise of 26%. A total of 63,231 people attended these courses (An average course attendance of 6.5  ). This means that since April 2012 340,684 have attended courses.

This gives a total figure of 566,100 ACTIVE drivers in the UK (mix of HGV & PCV). Active means they have attended ‘some’ training. The DFT estimates there are between 625,000 and 800,000 drivers in the UK that require DCPC so almost 75% are now involved in training. This number is growing steadily. The total number of DQC’s issued since it all began in 2008 is around 127,943.

Considering there are between 625,000 and 800,000 drivers in the UK then this isn’t a huge figure. We are obviously over the half way point but nowhere near half the total drivers have their DQC. However, figures for on-going training suggest good progress is being made.

Will there be a huge shortfall come the 2013 and 2014 deadlines? Since April 2012 there has been on average 5262 DQC issued per month. We have around 20 months to go so based on the average so far a further 105,000 cards will be issued giving a total issued of around 230,000 … way short of the 625,000 - 800,000 drivers estimated to need the card. But of course attendance apperars to be on the up and the number of DQCs issued is rising each month but there is still a long way to go - but around 400,000 drivers are now ‘in the system’ and actively attending courses and may be due to receive their DQCs very soon.

I now stand by to be verbally abused - which is something I am sure I deserve  But … for a change, just for something to do, why don’t we all actually have a sensible debate about this and leave the personal slagging off for another thread?

I think we can guess what the objections will be:

  1. I’m not doing Driver CPC…it’s a tax on my job

  2. I’m not filling my truck’s AdBlue tank…because AdBlue is animal wee

  3. I’m not checking my tyres…what difference does putting air in them make as everything has air in it anyway?

  4. I’m not checking my lights…I know all the roads in the UK so well that I don’t need to see where I’m going, and if others can’t see me, that’s their problem

  5. I’m not going to bother going into work this morning…by the time I get there they will have given my job to a Pole

  6. I’m not interested in economical driving…the more fuel I use the more likely the boss will think I’ve been working really hard and will give me a bonus.

All of the above is true…I was told it by a bloke in a lay-by outside Scunthorpe so it must be.

So you like listening and paying for bull[zb] then ?

Thanks for that Shep
looks like there will be either a mad rush towards deadline day or alot of drivers missing out or not bothering.
As far as statistics are concerned this thread has had 3 replies, 1 missed the point of the thread, 1 was reasonably amusing and the other was mine…

I’m biting the bullet and am gonna have to pull my finger out and get something done, I am planning on doing my adr and moffet at least then I will have done something useful.
I’m hoping by doing this, that WHEN there is a short fall those that jhave done it will benefit from it… But prob not we can all dream!
I will just add I already have 14hrs the 1st 7 were from an ivr recovery course which was around 3days long (we actually rolled a truck over) only the health and safty bits and bobs counted toward my cpc, however on that course I learnt a lot from the whole corse and can not understand how the rest of the corse did not count 2 my cpc. the other was a classroom jobby on drivers hours, which was a waste of time, I learnt nothing and came away very disappointed. I just hope if we have to repeat this [zb] every 5 years they develop courses we can actually learn from.

The end

Those figures are interesting. I hope they consider changing it to one day per year after 2014 as there is going to be a lack of places on courses towards the deadline as well as inflated prices. :open_mouth:

Some of this was said earlier in the year

Doubt they will change it to 1 day per year so more likely to be inflated prices

I know a few people that are not going to do it due to age ( so they will be retiring ) some will leave the industry but there are new drivers around who will have it to take some of the places

I was unfortunate enough to be at a dcpc course yesterday. Learnt nothing same as last time.
One interesting point was raised though, apparently the Germans are not committed to bringing dcpc compulsion in until 2016, therefore it will be rolled back to 2016 in this country? :open_mouth:

Very good but how many of them are PSV not HGV

fingermissing:

I don’t know and neither do the DSA. They do not distinguish between the two.

However - the basic figures of a max of 800,000 drivers in need of DCPC includes around 120,000 PCV drivers which I believe to be a fairly educated guess

Well done Shep!

Thanks for that. Better get on wi it then.

Got my card yesterday. That’s me safe and experienced 'till 2019 now.

I did however learn stuff, I learned that Sky plus struggles to record Moto gp, WSB and BSB at the same time.

If you want tom do ADR ,Moffet or Hi-ab as part of your DCPC make sure in advance of spending money that the course is JAUPT approved .Not every provider has the approval .
