Driver CPC Question

this one is for you recovery boys,
my son is a mechanic.
he sometimes has to use a 7.5 ton beavertail to recover broken down or accident damaged vehicles back to his base.
he has had a car license since 1992 , so will have grandfather rights for 7.5
Does he need a Driver CPC ■■
Is he exempt within 50Km of base ■■

gov.uk/guidance/driver-cpc- … s-examples

ROG:
Check if you need Driver CPC to drive a lorry, bus or coach - GOV.UK

yeh, thanks, Ive looked at that page but its still clear as mud…

IMO no dcpc needed as its an incidental part of the job where the mechanic needs to get it in order to fix it and its within 100 km of base

That is not a definitive legal view but based on what seems reasonable and logical

I think CPC required if he actually recovers the vehicle - he’s carrying goods.

A mechanic going to a break down may well be exempt as driving is incidental to the main employment as Rog has said. But if he doesn’t fix it and brings it back - CPC required.
