Driver coming back into the industry

I have a friend who is thinking about coming back, don’t think he has driven trucks for a while and let his hgv licence elapse, question is, if he passed his car test prior to 97 will he be ok to start doing his Dcpc now whilst he is waiting for DVLA to renew his HGV entitlement when he sends a medical in.
So basically will the CPC he does now which will cover 7.5 tonne, cover his class 1 when he gets it back, I would imagine it will but not 100% sure.

A DQC for HGVs will cover HGVs of any category, so as long as he has cat C1 on his licence he can book the DCPC courses and when completed his DQC will cover him for Cat C+E

That is something I did not think of, I am retired and one of the thousands waiting for DVLA to process my renewal of my HGV1 Licence. I also want to renew my cpc but thought I would have to wait till I got my class1 licence back before I could renew it. I have grandfather rights to C1 / C1E still valid on my licence, so does that mean I can renew the CPC with that instead of waiting on DVLA to pull their finger out and renew my class1 licence?

Thanks for the info Tachograph.

Yes, a Cat C1 is classed as a heavy goods vehicle (I know :grimacing: ) and you need a DQC to drive it commercially (exemptions excluded) so there’s nothing to stop you using it to do the DCPC periodic training.

Check when you book the training but you will find this is correct

I presume it is, I spoke to the boss today a guy called Stewart, he was telling me all about it and said £175 for the 35hours online course and never mentioned anything extra.

I thought the HGV moniker was a defunct term, having been replaced by LGV (large goods vehicle), which in terms of the licensing required to drive them would be everything from C1 upwards. Yet, here we are in an HGV driver shortage (with the government issuing press releases with the term included).

For categories defined by weight it would seem more logical to have ‘heavy’ as part of the name though. I mean some of these IVECO Daily vans aren’t even what could be considered ‘large’.

I thought the same when I first started looking back into the industry after time away…

Seems it’s a bit like metric & imperial for bridge/vehicle heights - never going to settle on just one for simplicity.

I am booked to do my CPC renewal with VR-Services online .
My Question is about Zoom, I have never done anything like this before, do I just download the free version zoom or the paid for version,
I have read that the free version you are only on it for 40 minutes and then you are kicked off, is that correct?

No. You won’t be kicked off after 40 mins. You only need the free version. Vr-services will have the paid version, that entitles them to setup a meeting for unlimited time.

As stu675 says.
Free, free, free.
Please don’t anybody be fooled into paying for Zoom when you don’t have to; I can understand the confusion.

Thanks for that Scaniaultimate and stu675 Yes it is confusing with the free version, had visions of me being shut out after 40 mins.
