Driver Assesment at Hermes

LGV 1 assessment for 3 hours. What should I expect? Thanks.

No idea but…

I reckon two and half hours of company spiel, watching safety videos, being lectured witless about company policy, being shown how to sharpen your pencils, being told not to put your pencil case on the desk and half an hour of driving a truck doing the BSM shuffle.

Good luck and have fun.

Being paid? Or expected to do it for free?

Drive to someone’s house and lob some parcels in their garden I’d imagine.

They usually all follow similar lines…

as it’s Hermes I’d expect a sit-down and going through your licence, digitacho, driver’s card, passport, national insurance, application form (either fill in or check).

Then as mentioned videos/talks about company procedures, being shown around the depot

there may be a multiple choice question exercise/test about drivers hours blah blah (similar to CPC covered stuff)

driving assessment which includes your checks around tractor unit / trailer before setting off, coupling-uncoupling, some end of driving questions.

at the end a final chat about hours you can work/job stuff

that is usually what I found myself when going to assessments anyway…

I would have though there would be training on how many parcels you can cram in the back of your family car

Getting bored to death by the aptly named John Titterton.

Pound to a penny the accessor will pull you up about something about your driving, something really minor, check your mirrors more, he thought you did not anticipate things, use exhaust brake more, to much braking, to much accelerating etc.
Got to prove they are worth the money I suppose, they are a necessary evil, need because you don’t want the numpties lose in company vehicles, but I think it takes a certain kind of wazzock to put himself forward as god as far as driving a truck goes.
Good luck with it, you will pass assessment, you won’t give him a perfect drive!!!

So a 3hr assessment to become a paid employee, agency get a here’s the keys off you go.
Double standards or what.

Agency get the same as full time staff re assessments

Going by most the Hermes drivers, it’s drive flat out everywhere, don’t slow down in the roadworks etc

Maybe they have a selection of fences of varying heights to see how high you can drop kick that parcel over.

It was this all over.

I failed the test on WTD so didn’t get the driving assessment. Trainer gave me some literature to read and set a future assesment for me. Returned and it was a different test mainly on WTD. FTA paper which as I’d read up on I passed. Driving assesment was really good as I was given sound advice throughout the 1.5 hr journey. Back to base and three reverses into 3 different bays. Passed with no further comments on my driving.

Have you taken the job at the end?

Ask for a practical demonstration.
