Driver Admits to Killing Cyclist

Jump to the end of the thread, it appears the chap who saw it all on pages 2&3 suddenly disappeared when a real life copper started looking for him to get a statement.

Interesting to get a cyclists perspective on things though, they are just divided as we are on what the solution should be…

Never heard of muckaway which this firm do in London paid by the ton.
Same as the bonus schemes in London every firm I know pays either day rate or by the hour.
Only bonus scheme is non accident bonus on some firms.
Bonus schemes pretty much went out about 10 years ago

Motivation of money earning (and it’s method), obviously has an effect on the manner of a truck drivers driving style. However, as has already been discussed, the issue of a cyclist coming up the inside of an LGV is complex.

Let’s take the cyclist. A large proportion choose the cycle as a method of eliminating traffic problems. Combine this with cycle lanes on the n/s of the lane in many cases, which then turns into a largish cycle box at the head of the queue.

Human nature dictate’s that “It won’t happen to me”. Inevitably the cyclist will then ’ take a chance ’ whilst the lights are on red.

However human nature also dictate’s that the driver may check his notes for a second or two or his sat nav, whilst the lights are on red, and not notice the cyclist creeping down his inside. All it takes is the cyclist now being in the blind spot, or a failure to check the n/s mirror and tragedy strikes.

The combination of population, road layout and complete size/weight difference, conspires against the cyclist. Add in human nature, and in my opinion, (although unfortunately negative), the problem WILL NOT go away.
