My truck has had a problem jumping out of 3/4 7/8 gears and crunching the gears its only done 150000k so a low miler really.
The garage sauy the syncrhomesh is gone and that it happens , but im sure my boss will try the old “driver abuse” route.
I dont drive any differently to anyone else although a lot of the work is up and down streets etc so plenty of gearchanges as opposed to sitting on a long routs in one gear for a while.
It’s just a “Friday afternoon” 'box. Unless you’ve trying to change gear without using the clutch I dont see what you could do to bugger up the gearbox.
I’m a qualified mechanic, I can’t give you a yes or a no but I’ll explain what a synchro does which may help in a roundabout way
The synchro’s are a pair of cone shaped pieces (one goes inside the other) The basics of it is; as you move the gear stick, the cones are forced together, they slow down / speed up so they’re both the same speed (synchronised) this makes two cogs turn at the same speed and allows them to mesh (slot into each other). The cone shapes wear out over time so they don’t synchronise quickly and engaging gears becomes difficult. You can, of course, wear the synchromeshes out prematurely by trying to force gears quicker than they want to go but, obviously, they’re something that will wear out because of how they work which may happen early due to lazy servicing (just check the level, not replace the oil) or the wrong oil being used.
You may also find it’s a more proffessional way for the garage to tell your boss “the gearbox is knackered, we don’t know why and haven’t got the time / expertise to fix it, get a new one and we’ll fit it”
But, I’d wait and see first, he can’t prove anything really so you might find you’re worrying about nothing. Best of luck anyway.
We have a 58 plate crapego on our fleet with a bob basic 6 speed box. I had to use it for a week or two when my regular toy was absent! Anyhow the 58 plate one jumped out of 2nd gear, at first I thoguht it was me heavy handed but the more I drove the more i realised it was dodggy. Got defected and back to dealers. To cut a long story short its now with its regular driver and its been in to the dealers 4 times for them to attempt to fix it, its gradually got worse and jumps out of more gears. Finally a few weeks back they opted to change the box completly, problem now solved.
You didnt get it from new did you Jammy so he cant blame you really, as its a wee Daf then say no more!
im guessing its manual am a diesel fitter by trade now my 1st guess would be the gear linkage is worn or has altered in some way meanin the lever isnt pushing the gears right the way home, hence the grinding an popping out of gears as others have said could be a fault inside the actual box
I wondered about the linkages too, especially as it is a builders supply truck and Jammy goes off roading in it I doubt the synchros would be so selective if you will forgive the pun about it dropping out of 3/4 & 7/8

one of our drivers did that with a renault premium,no idea why he was doing it, he would yank it into gears with out the clutch
NO i dont change gear without the clutch unless im driving an auto box, Ive been driving it a year it an 06 and was at another depot.
The reason I ask is our other driver recently had new brakes and was accused of being too hard on them driver abuse !!! he also broke the tacho head one day funnily enough the day after it came back from the agency guy using it and this again was driver abuse so im expecting my boss to say its driver abuse, our company are more interested in cement and sand 6 week serevice and inpsections are a pain in the ■■■■■■ meaning our builders cant be spoonfed on their usual daily impulse orders.
I revesed in to a skip with a builder acting as banksman and bent the rear under run bar (try explaining what one of them is to an office person !!!) of course this was my fault for trusting him to be a banksman.
The excue for sitting down for a coffee and saying your on a tacho break is met with lazy ■■■■■■■ or youve been sat in laybys all day and you need a break now eh?.
