Drawbar unit

The greedy farmers will often push the bales from behind if there’s a bit of bed left to get another on ,you won’t notice until they expand and some come off ,you will look at the lorry and wonder where they’ve come from . :unamused:

Hi UKT if for some reason you end up with an A frame remember you go the opposite
lock to an artic. They take a bit of getting used to.

And i dont mean to sound like teaching you to ■■■■ eggs but have had to teach quite a few seasond lorry drivers that when strapping down feed the strap through with the ratchet closed and hang of the strap whilst pulling it up through the ratchet otherwise you will never get enough tension on the strap before its the spool is full ive seen it happen manytimes and know its how several loads have been lost by blokes that should have known better

I was actually wondering how to strap down the bales without crushing them.

Dont worry about crushing them do them as tight as you can possibly manage Especially on hay

If it is an a frame UKt just try not to get in a situation where you have to reverse. I know that’s almost impossible some of the time but just try to save yourself hassle.
Also if you do have to reverse try to keep out of confined spaces. Even going back in a straight line can be a problem for a beginner. If you are reversing do NOT let the A frame axle go to far, pull forward straighten it out and try again.Stay away from sloped areas. Obviously same as an artic keep speed down and be totally on the ball with your steering.Easier said than done!

Good luck…let’s know what type it was and how it went.

Is that the truck in your avatar? if so, cant you clock the configuration of it from the original pic ? or was that just a stock pic of a Hay & Straw wagon?

dont forget to measure the height as well, also Barley straw is lighter than Wheat straw too.

No that isn’t the truck, it is a stock picture. Another thing that has crossed my mind is the height and weight, would imagine if I start off with a dry load and it rains, there will be a significant weight gain?

If it is an A frame, initially you turn the steering as if reversing a rigid then watch the trailer steer axle turn towards where you want the trailer to go.After that you wiggle the back of the prime mover to alter trailer steering.Always watch the steer axle in your mirror.Don’t try to reverse too fast.

Well, you should have a top sheet on the truck. Moisture depends on whether the straw is barn or field stored, if out of a field, the top bales will be the wettest , the bottom ones full of Rats!

I would think, hay and straw is the sector you would most likely find an a frame trailer.

Here my truck. Right pig to reverse. Picture doesn’t really do it justice size wise. Longer then a artic.

Im a day driver so sometimes do deliveries with it. :unamused:

Do they handle well Adam?

Lovely going forward. Trailer almost fully follows the unit when going around corners hardly cuts in at all.

remember when you go round a roundabout when loaded with hay/straw , take care or the lot will be on the floor

Well at least if I hit any low bridges it should be a soft landing.
