Interesting reading here, I have seen adverts for mon-fri trampers running out of Chatham (my nearest depot, I live near gatwick) and was thinking of applying. Has anyone got any info on work out of this depot?
Tilbury is about the same distance
At least with Chatham I won’t forget about paying the dart charge for my car on the way to and from work and then get whacked with a pcn!
I am a month in with Downton’s now, and so far so good. Mainly local work, UPM is a big contract so there is a lot of paper reel work out of Shotton paper mill and baled waste cardboard from the likes of Aldi, Nisa, Home Bargains etc. Did a Runcorn to Glasgow yesterday so that’s certainly my furthest run so far.
Office staff/planners treat you really well(out of Runcorn), most day men have an allocated unit and they are quite well looked after.
Microlise is studied quite carefully so your driving is under scrutiny, all though to be fair I am quite an economical driver anyway so it’s not something that really bothers me, although I can understand a lot of drivers getting ■■■■■■ off with it.
Money is average. Worked last Monday(B/hol) and got paid double time for it. Paid weekly and had no issues. Holiday money is based on an average of your last so many weeks.
Don’t seem to get mithered, fuel/adblue on site along with a truckwash and a decent crew of mechanics. Uniform provided after 4 weeks service. All in all seems like a good place to work.
I used to be based in Chatham…Now Tilbury…Still run by Chatham though…The work out of this Depot is again mainly reels out of sheerness & Tilbury…Also timber & tissue…Mainly Actros fleet down there. But a few new dafs appearing…Good bunch of lads in the planning dept…The pay like anywhere could be better. But it sure is’nt that bad…

The closest depot to me is Kings Lynn. What do they do out of that depot?
Norske Skog paper imports/running it about the country to print works. It’s cheaper to cut down trees in Norway, ship it over here as “Brand new paper”, and then make newspapers out of it - than making 100% recycled paper back into Newsprint as Aylesford used to, but could not do cheaply enough to compete with foreign imports.

Done 4 hours at Tilbury… Tackle and especially Trailers are Sxxxt…My impression was that they are so profit focused, that as well as paying fools wages, they can’t even be bothered maintaining their equipment… ( took me and fork truck driver, and 1 more driver to open the curtain,… Embarrassing or what…)
Other thing is they think they are so perfect and actually set the standards for the industry as a whole.
Have a big harsh breaking incident, that’s it the jobs worth driver trainer has you in the office saying you should of planned the situation better, even pin pointing the road on Google Earth saying that in no circumstances should you need to harsh break on that road.
Fuel figures are put on a league table where it looks like your a naughty boy if your near the bottom.
Don’t do this and don’t do that is all you hear from driver trainers etc,but then planners still push you to the limit.
I know some of there management lurk on here so I’m been careful what I write.
My depot had a good manager but that was the only positive of the job.
Drivers at Runcorn are not happy, day men get sent home early so they dont pay overtime.Rolling week drivers do long hours because they dont get paid overtime. The office staff like YES MEN if you stand up for youself they shaft you every chance they get.Its not a good firm to work for and they have a big turnover of drivers.
