Downton bought out

Same thing happened to the first decent firm I drove for, Taylor’s of martley. I’d like to think the founder, mr. Downtown is spinning in his grave like mr. Taylor probably did.

I used to do a bit of subbing now and again for Taylors in the 80s. I met old Don Taylor a few times, didn’t know he’d passed on, although I suppose he was a good age even then.
Knew his son, (can’t for the life of me remember his name) He did a bit of tranping himself before going into the office at Martley.
Remember a guy in the office called Tony, and oh yeh…I remember the village pub a mile or so from the yard.

Don was the son of the founder, Edgar iirc. I was there for 3 years in the late 90’s and remember don mooching around the yard looking like the yard sweeper [emoji23]. By then his 3 sons were running it. Graham who was TM, Stephen and ? Graham was the only one I really saw the other were more admin. There was 2 very long servers with Taylor surnames (not relatives) you may have met, ted and Malcom.

Some of you guys talking like downtown was a good company to work for. As far as I know they pay rubbish money!

I don’t know them from Adam, just don’t like the way family firms get sold to these big faceless corporate concerns although I understand why they do it. Maybe it’ll be good re. Wages for the drivers…but I doubt it. [emoji57]

Yeh Graham, that’s him.
Don was the boss when I used to visit.
I knew Ted very well, he moved up here to Carlisle.

www.logisticsmanager.com/emergevest-buy … wnton-75m/

Motor Transport says that EmergeVest paid 75m for the business, according to there last set of accounts the Company was worth nearly 30m so that gives the Downton family 45m for the goodwill.Nice work if you can get it!

I may be alone in thinking this but I’d presume the profit margin of a large general haulier is pretty thin so selling out for a presumably decent bit of coin seems sensible. After all the reason for building a business is surely the exit and a well funded retirement.

Don’t get fooled that downton was a good family business, the company had no family values whatsoever,
I will keep my view of SOME of the owners to myself as I’d probably get in to bother if I posted them on here

Yeah ok, fair enough.

Its getting bxxxxy worse, sooner or later there won’t be any well known companies as they will all be owned by investors under names most of us have never heard of,they at Downton said the decision was not taken lightly,a big fat cheque probably made their minds up within a day or so

It can’t get any worse than it is, so all is good

I agree, nobody is going to refuse a good offer for a business.
