Down and Out in Ipswich and Felixstowe

Life’s never dull in Suffolk, and so I’m posting a few pics I’ve taken on my travels in the last couple of weeks. Mainly Volvos and Scanias but with a few others thrown in for good measure.

Starting off with this really rather nice Volvo owned by Eurolink International:

While we’re looking at Volvos, this Dutch frige puller was also parked nearby:

Not sure if the Dutch understand the significance of the term ‘crown jewels’ in English slang, although maybe the fridge is loaded with…no I won’t go there!!!

The next one is a Volvo pictured at the BP garage at the docks:

And finally on the Volvo front this one parked up at the Routemaster:

Never having used the Routemaster I was surprised how shabby and run down it is, the yard next door is used by various hauliers including Routemaster Haulage (whose purple Scania you can see above) - original company name guys - and the top class fleet of John Hogan.

Next, some Stralis (what’s the plural of 'Stralis??):

Followed by a few shots of some Polish Scanias parked up at the Orwell Truckstop. I have seen quite a few of these on the roads, pulling IRF trailers, but the company seems to be called ‘Elkar’, they have trailers too.

Then suddenly the earth tilted by 45 degrees to the left!! Careful, getting a bit arty!!!

Note a Volvo as well below!

And this red one was also Polish registered and parked up with the others:

Next up, if you’ve bothered to read this far (!!) is a pic of a skeletal trailer at the docks - I only took this because I couldn’t believe how low the trailer rode - it’s tiny!!!

And then a bit of a line up at the BP garage again. Now take a look at this. It looks like another Scania 4 series parked up at the docks. Ok, it is…but look at the badging!!! It’s a 144 that claims to put out 720 bhp!!! :open_mouth:

Now either the owner is one of those guys who has a BMW 316 with a 325 badge on the back, or this is an awesome, stump-pulling monster!! Anybody know??

9edit0 - this MAN and the Matthews motor were also waiting nearby:

Ok, just to finish off with, here are a couple of Scanias waiting at Ipswich. Hope you enjoyed your tour of Suffolk, keep checking back for more!!!

Next, some Stralis (what’s the plural of 'Stralis?? A ‘Gaggle.’

Don’t know about that, here’s a pic of one of their trailers from another site (there were no trailers at Orwell when I snapped these ones).

As for the cabotage question, couldn’t possibly say but I imagine VOSA wouldn’t have too much trouble spotting these if they wanted to!!

elkar rent is a trailer rental company who are owned by welsi bv (edwin who owns welsi and his wife owns elkar), which own a 50% stake in irf hence all the polish ones are over in the uk pulling their trailers. the amount of polish motors doing that for all the lines out of felixstowe and harwich etc is scary to say the least, then you have companies like rynart trading, which are dutch registered trucks but the drivers all used to be estonians, but as they cannot underpay them anymore, they have got rid of them and replaced them with romanian drivers, no wonder british trucks on traction cant make a living

Starting off with this really rather nice Volvo owned by Eurolink International:

This Volvo was bought new by CMH from Woolpit, it was used to pull I.R.F. trailers, then it was traded in at Niel Jarrold at Attleboro for a new 6x2 which looks even better than the one in the pic. Eurolink are the 2nd owners of this truck.

If you look closer you wil see that they also run Daf XF105s Super Space Cabs as well.

Kindle, thanks for the info, yes I can see the DAF now!!

Who are CMH, do they work out of Loadwell’s yard, or Leggetts?

Here are a few more I forgot to post at the weekend, including a couple that may be of interest to anybody who likes the P&O Ferrymasters trucks. Their depot is in Ipswich. I didnt take them at a very good time because as you can see, many of the trucks are out on’t road!!

Then a couple more from Felixstowe, a nice Volvo, a view of the exit to the BP Garage, plus a Scania:

Final one from my last spree…this K&M of Ipswich Scania.

Enjoy!

As far as I know, Elkar are a truck and trailer rental company.

That black trailer is in there standard colour scheme.
I suppose those white Scanias with IRF on the front and Elkar on the door will be their units rented out on contract to IRF.

Nice to see some shots of Felix!

CMH is owned by Ray Miller, who started out as an O/D pulling for Goodways with an old left ■■■■■■ 240 F88.His brother-in-law,who I think is called David was doing the bookwork for Ray,and then went on the road too with a 111.
Ray pulled for Goodways for a number of years before transferring to Continental Cargo Carriers, pulling fridges.
He then started pulling fridges for another ferry trailer operator, whose name escapes me,but Kindle will know,by now Ray was running a brace of FH16 520’s.

CMH was featured a few years ago in one of the truck mags when Ray bought the silver FH12 500.However,he and David then fell out over something and Ray was back on his own.
Not sure if he’s still going now though.

I have very fond memories of the Routemaster Motel from the mid 70’s,before I moved to Felixstowe and before I even started driving.
My brother was a mechanic at the time at Ancliff’s,and virtually every evening you could find all the garage staff,as well as a number of Ancliff driver’s,enjoying several pints of Adnam’s finest in the bar.
It was a very popular place, every night it was full, even weekends, and the restaurant served good food too.
There was also a TV room upstairs.
I’m not sure that the motel rooms were used much, but they used to rent them out for driver’s to use the bath or shower facilities.
The ground floor rooms were then rented out as office space.

It’s a great shame that the Routemaster gradually declined.

KW, that’s interesting, thanks for the info.

Is it still running as a hotel does anybody know? There are various hauliers based out of the yards just to the north of the building, as you can see from the pic of the white KTS Volvo - including Routemaster Transport, JFH, and I also noticed that an office space (now empty) had green Simon Boon International logos on it. There were a few cars parked outside when I took the pics so I assume now it’s just offices, tho’ it looks ripe for demolition to me.

the routemaster is (or was a couple of years ago) still a motel, i have spent a night in there. i too have fond memories of the place, i started my first job there when i left school in an office in the routemaster, even before that i did work experience there (well gazed out the window at the trucks mostly!!), and smelling the lovely smell of bfp (british fermentation products) from across the road! bob carter who owned trans uk used to park trucks there too, and i think he worked for seawheel out of the routemaster before starting trans uk too. i still pop down there now and again when im home, the shell garage is long gone too

I’ll try and remember to get some decent pictures of it for a seperate thread!

Youre spot on there Keith, and Ray went onto I.R.F after C.C.C. He is still going, down to just the one truck, a very nice 6x2 running at 4 metres. Peanuts now drives for Tony Everrett.
Corcheela, his new truck parks up in Leggets yard.

Last time I bumped into Peanuts was when he was driving for Mick Sadler, doing the car parts into Land-Rover & Jaguar same as me.
When you see him next tell him I said hello.
Is he still going over the water?

Next, some Stralis (what’s the plural of 'Stralis??}

A scrapyard

That sounds like a familiar nickname, I remember from the late 70’s a guy known as Peanuts, used to live near the station in Elmswell - had long hair and drove a white transit. Might be a long shot but would that be the same guy?
