DOW FREIGHT SERVICES (1970's/80's)

I don’t feel like driving today!!

Old advert from 1976 with a Dow Freight trailer.

Nm

any body remember a guy called ozzy he was from skem he worked at dow for a few years i worked with him in the early 80s out of felixstowe he was a character

Hello Grumpy, I can’t remember anybody called Oz except an Australia guy who worked from the Swindon depot in the mid eighties.
The only guys that I know from Skelmersdale who drove for Dow Freight were two brothers called Terry and Davie Smith.

Terry near Frankfurt.

Terry near Koblenz.

Terry with his daughter in Austria.

Terry’s daughter in Italy.

A mans gotta do what a mans gotta do and if a bit of grovelling’s needed so be it.

Seeing all this grovelling there must of been a new motor in the yard. :open_mouth:
That photo of MNC 452W (ex Irene) has just reminded me that Dave Hammond must of started in 1984 when I was given that M.A.N. 22.321 twin steer B911 SND, it was the only new motor that I ever had at Dow.
Looking at that photo of MNC 452W it looks like it has had a cannibalised front fitted and is due for a respray so it must of been involved in an accident sometime after I had finished driving it.
The top photo is of Billy Morrey in the Mocamp in Istanbul when he was just a little lad.

Perhaps the number plates “fell off” Steve, and they “accidentally” we’re refitted to the wrong vehicle,

Just a thought you understand!!!

David

Hi David, the number plate looks like the only new part that’s been fitted on that vehicle in years.
I am going to ask the Mods if they can remove that photo as it’s so distressing to see that motor (ex Irene) in that condition. It must of been at least seven years old when that photo was taken.
Irene and I spent four very happy years sleeping together and travelling all over Europe and parts of Asia. She never drank one drop of oil, I washed and serviced her regularly, I looked after her and she looked after me. I was offered a younger model and being young and adventurous I decided to take it and so we had to part and move on.
I now know exactly how Sandway felt when he saw his pride and joy EPU 305T in another life painted
pink.

:sunglasses: Great pics Mushroomman! Robert

Hi Robert, I am very pleased that you enjoyed them.
Now, can you or anybody else explain to me why on photo number five you have to use the slider at the side to see the whole photo.
This has happened on a few occasions with some of my photos and I think it started when this computer changed all by it’s self one night from Windows 8 to Windows 10.

Wishing you Robert, all the Mods and everybody else on Trucknet a very merry Christmas and prosperous New Year.
Regards Steve.

And a Merry Christmas to you too! DEANB can explain about the photo slider - I’m afraid I don’t know! Cheers, Robert

Yes, I have the same problem with some of my photos. The slider only started to appear recently and I am using an Apple MacBook Air. I thought at one time it was the way I copied them but after reading your post Steve perhaps not. Definitely a bit of a pain.

Forgot to say Steve I enjoyed seeing the photos you recently posted but didn’t enjoy seeing all that snow. I have attached a photo taken this afternoon of what I prefer. May sit by the sea all day tomorrow as well.
A Merry Christmas to all Dow men.

Found this photo on the web Steve. The front of the Merc unit may look a bit odd as I removed a couple of people standing there. I would hazard a guess as being quite an early Dow subbie or maybe just a shunter unit. Number plate looks like HEH 226J Perhaps you know better?

Photos posted on our Italian colleagues website. Hopefully some haven’t been seen before.

Hello Steve. I have just seen the letters MOCN (Midden Oosten Chauffeurs Nederlands) on a Dutch drivers website. Not sure if the letters on your photo relates to them though.

I put that photo on Trucknet about ten years ago and I noticed that on the photo that you have put on some (z.b.) has put the letters S.MOCN with the copyright symbol on it, I bet that he can’t show us the negative.
I shall put the original photo back on along with another photo that I took on the same morning along with an earlier black and white photo of Sandra just before I took her over.

Hello Brian, that photo looks like it was taken in the early days of Dow, a bit before my time.
As soon as I saw the number plate I thought that it could be a motor from the Stoke on Trent area and for some reason Chapman and Ball sprang to mind. There were two ex Chapman and Ball drivers who I can remember working for Dow, John Roberts and Billy Macdonald and after searching through The Old Stoke Drivers thread it jogged my memory that Chapman and Ball ran a few Fiats but I don’t know if they had any Mercs.
Then it came back to me that there was another driver at Dow who had worked for a company called Morgan Overland and then I remembered that Phil Bunch had also worked at Morgan Overland after Thor had packed up and that Jeff The Flying Foden had put a couple of Phil’s old photos on Trucknet a few year ago. I am not sure if the ex Morgan Overland driver at Dow Freight was Ken Bates, Alan Morrey or Tony Gibbons but whoever it was told me that the owner was either Terry or Barry Morgan and after doing a bit of a search I came across these photos.
I have also added a link that somebody may be interested in as Steve Coates, the son of Malcolm Coates asked on here a few years ago if anybody had known his father. Well I never met Malcolm but I do remember a few of the Dow drivers at the Swindon depot who were ex Radclive drivers mentioning his name and at the back of my mind I have a slight feeling that Dow may of bought
Malcolm’s tilt trailer when Malcolm and his family emigrated to Australia in the early eighties.
For anybody who has never seen Steven’s web site then here is the link.

stevecoates.com.au/random/en … uck-1970s/

As Chazzer has mentioned on the Radclive thread that Malcolm did some work for Zust and Bachmeier and on Steven’s web site it mentions that his dad did some work for Dow Freight, I wondered if this may of been Malcolm’s old trailer.

Morgan Overland.

B.T.W. Brian, I feel that it might be a million to one chance but I have just got to ask it. Did your friend Ian Morgan who worked for Steven’s at Macclesfield ever work for Blue Dart Transport at their Stoke depot in the 70’s/80’s.

Regards Steve.

Great post Steve. Makes interesting reading. As far as asking Ian anything that will depend on our paths crossing again, ‘ships that pass in the night’ comes to mind. I hope to see him again but it certainly won’t be before next winter. However, I am fairly sure most of his working life was spent working for companies around Greater Manchester. One thing he did say was that he knew a Dow driver by the name of Mick Downes. Ring any bells?
