Double Manning

Can anyone explain the duble manning rules as I will be double manning a vehicle with my brother soon?

The daily rest requirement is 9 hours within 30 hours of the end of the previous daily or weekly rest period. This means you can do a shift of 21 hours. If for example you started driving at 06:00 you will need to have started a daily rest period before 03:00 the following day. In that time it would be possible to drive 18 - 20 hours, depending whether you both have 10 hour driving days still available to you or not.

The normal rules on 45 minutes break before exceeding 4.5 hours driving apply but one driver can take his break while the other drives. Daily rest however must be taken in a stationary vehicle.

The presence of a second driver is optional during the first hour of a double manned journey, however, they must be present in the vehicle for the remainder of the period. One driver could start the journey then collect the other driver from a different location, provided this is within one hour of starting. If the other driver joins later than one hour then single manning rules on rest would apply, even if both drivers drove during the shift.

Each time you swap drivers the tacho charts will need swapping over within the tacho head, position 1 being for the person who is driving, and the mode switches set accordingly. On some of the newer drawer type tachos the second man tacho automatically records POA , the square symbol, when the vehicle moves. You could write on the back of the chart that it was double manned and you were actually on break.

How it works double manning with a digi tacho I have no idea as I have never used one.

my bit of double manning starting off with a lecture on do and donts so here goes assuming your doing serious distance

senior driver is the boss
so they get to choose which shift they start with
driving no more than 3 hours
no smoking if other driver dosnt smoke
no loud radio for night shifts
during shift both use bottom bunk for sleep

other than being knackering it worked out okish
