Best trundle along until you can see an obstruction would be my advice.

Best re read the highway code rule 258 then. Doesnt say “trundle on anyway till you see whats happening”

Thanks for the advice but I’ll carry on relying on common sense and using my own judgement rather than some guy sat in an office making signs say different things for, what is more often than not, totally unnecessary reasons. But thanks again!

So the lane is closed, but you’ll ignore that until you know better? Jesus Christ, what sort of attitude do you have? You really need to go and get a different job if you think it’s ok to carry on in a closed lane willy nilly…when you cause some horrendous situation, or worse kill somebody, I hope you can live with that. Sheesh!!

But that’s the point signs can’t be relied upon. The main problem in the UK is that the warning signs don’t seem to be zoned.

I’ll give you a recent example
I am just on the way back from Vienna and on the way out last Friday . S/b m40 signs from j4 saying obstruction on slip road. Which slip road no one knows. Everyone slows down. Signs were on all the way until the M25 junction where there was - past tense- on obstruction on the slip to the clockwise m25, so no other traffic was affected. Where the obstruction was - looked like a piece of tyre - the signs were off and national limit indicated.

Having travelled back from Vienna, last night and today, I have seen a couple of incidents, the last one being near Dunkirk and a sign indicating an accident at 3k and of course there was an accident. No miles and miles of reduced speed limit and unspecific warnings. This leads people like myself to believe them.

In France when they indicate there is an animal in the road in 5 Kms, there is. Amazing to think someone is taking responsibility for information being given.

Traveling back along the m20,25,40 tomorrow I will be able to offer more examples.

Whether you believe the signs or not you need to drive to the conditions and adjust your speed to what you can and cannot see. I don’t need a generic sign to tell me how to be sensible.

Maybe you should hand your license back then. If your so arrogant you think you can decide what signs to follow and only need to obey the road rules when it suits you then you really dont belong on the road. If we ever get to the stage of road signs being for info only and allowing common sense from the driver to decide to follow it or not then we truely are ■■■■■■.
And given that you’d carry on down a lane with flashing red lights and a great big red X,with no idea what the danger is,then I dont have a great deal of trust in your common sense to be honest.

Road signs are classed are road conditions. If it says dont go in this lane then your not driving to conditions if your battering along it anyway. If it suddenly becomes ok to decide yourself then everyone will carry on till they see something and at some point it will end badly when a danger springs up.
I really do hope your just one of trucknets usual Saturday night bored posters who says things designed for a reaction because your comments beggar belief if you truly act like this

In my view, if they’re going to have managed motorways, as a cheap alternative to building new road infrastructure that meets demand, they do need to manage it better.

Why don’t those fancy gantry cameras above each lane flash at every vehicle passing underneath with the red ‘X’?

Why do they have to ONLY key on “speeding 85mph+”?

I don’t even see the damned things going off when the gantry says “50” and everyone ploughs through at 70 regardless… :imp:

“Motorway Management” would work a lot better if it were enforced 100% I reckon…

Not looking for a reaction but thanks for your advice. I look forward seeing you observe every matrix on the m25. 50mph down to 40, then 30 whilst all the while you can see the next gantry set at National limit. Or 4 lanes down to 2 when you can see the road ahead for 1km or more is completely safe and running fine.

Whilst you can’t rely on random matrix signs you should carry on driving safely and to the road conditions, and part of that means available road view. When they sort the signs, and the population starts believing in them - as in France - they are introduced into the lexicon of road use.

When the weather was bad with severe gales, the bridge was shut to all traffic with red X warnings, the one near Goole.
About four foreign artic drivers ignored the warning and were blown over on their sides.
A few UK high sided vans were on their sides.
The diverted traffic was a long queue around back roads.
A police man told me, even though the red X,s are marked up, they physically can not stop them .

You seem very concerned about what others are doing, legal or not, and seeing those who choose not to obey get in trouble. Ignore them and drive your own truck rather than fretting about what other drivers are doing.

But what we see is also what Joe Public see. Their impression is probably worse that ours as we know what trucks are capable of.
You often see here posts mentioning how the public have no respect for trucks anymore yet you see some of the stunts that drivers try and it’s no wonder people either hate trucks or are ■■■■ scared of them.

Maybe if drivers started acting like professional drivers we might start getting treated like professional drivers.

The problem is - it’s hard to ignore someone racing up your inside when you’ve already got over into lane 4 (1-3 already red 'x’ed) and it’s often a UK Artic to, cutting in at the last minute as the cones come across. THIS ■■■■■■ me off no end, as does seeing other artic drivers on their bloody phone during an overtake. I could be plod FFS - At least they could go through the pretence of ducking the offending hand-held out of sight as we get level with each other! :imp:
